    Stalk swap trick

The biggest niggle I have on my B3 Coupe, also applies to B4 Avants in the way you have to double flick the rear wiper stalk. It just jives wrong when you drive a more modern Avant regularly so I started looking at the parts system on Audi A4 (B5) inspired by other recent discoveries of parts re-use.

The one we have is 8D9 953 503A (plus 01C for black color spec)
On a 1995 A4 Avant (with rear wash/wipe) is identical except it ends 503C

Later model years get a variant of that stalk that ends in 'E' - does that one have variable wipe control for the front wipers as well ?

I'm reasonably confident they are interchangeable just from the part number derivation but I'll need to grab one to be sure. Nothing useful on eBay at the moment and they are expensive brand new. Just wondered if anyone has one about or BTDT already ?

    Paul

PS - It needs to be one with the tripcomputer buttons built in of course... Even if I have to rewire connectors on the stalk this would be a neat upgrade.

I hope an answer can be found, I too was finding it annoying having to flick it twice just to get it to do a single pass

Stalks will need rewiring as they changed the wiring schematic on B4 cars in MY95 when the A4 was launched. I know this from experience hving done some experiments on my TDi.

Variable front wiper control is easily achieved by swapping in a MkIII Golf infinately variable wiper relay (3B0 955 531)

Good info Ben... I'm not worried about rewiring - it was just to know if they physically fit first. I know about the intermittent front relay - BTDT, but its the double waggle for the rear wiper I don't like.

I'll have a look at the schematics in due course.

Hold it on for 2-3 seconds and it will do a few swipes and auto park ;-)

The other problem you'll come across is the increase in steering column diameter. That is what stopped progress on the TDi as we were trying to fit the earlier stalks.

I wonder of the rear wiper control could be changed with a relay swap. rather than changing the stalks.

I´m currently under way swapping the stalk in my 94 S2 limo for an A4 -99 avant stalk. The reason i do this is because i´m switching to a 3-spoke airbag steeringwheel and must have the larger diameter stalks.

Physically it fits, but then you get to rewire everything. The lightsconnector needs two "X"-pins instead of one, and the turnsignals has a separate 3-pin connector on the lefthand side instead of going over to the wiperconnector as on the S2.

The A4 also has the variable interval wiperknob, which the 94 s2 doesn´t have. now i´ve read that pin 5 and 6 in the bordcomputerconnector is for the variable interval and i´m thinking to wire these pins to a new doublerelay (have the part no somewhere) should make my s2 work with this variable interval.

Do you think it will work?

Is it as easy as that?

I drive my girlfreinds MK3 quite often. And not having the infinately variable speed intermittant front wiper on my coupe, is really bugging me!

Its a wicked easy system for those that dont know:
It means that you can do a single (or more) wipe with any one of the speed settings. when you then turn them off a time delay is recorded until you turn the wipers on again, to the intermitant setting, this is then the timed frequency of your intermittant wipes.

Got one on mine dude, just swap the relay. Nice little mod I got the relay from vagparts

Reagrding the rear wiper, i never found it annoying since i just hold the stalk back for 2 seconds and it swipes 3 times then sits.
