It's to adjust the fuel gauge. The black knob itself pulls off to reveal a recess inside that accepts a 3 or 4mm alan key (can't remember)
Hard to remove whilst still in the cluster. Best removed when the fuel gauge is out of the cluster.
Also best not to mess around with it too much without following some other procedures. These can be seen on Paul's S2 central site.

ahh yes, whilst I had the dials out for the bulbs I changed a small lever with 6 or 7 setting, by mistake! I think this is to do with the fuel gauge too. When I put the dials back I had lost half a tank of fuel what should I do?

Sorry, above link doesn't go to the specific page.

Same page as above, then click on "Fuel & Range Calibration"
That also gives info on the switch you have moved.

For anyone who has Code 53; This code is displayed when the far left hand stalk on the instrument cluster is stuck in or 'on'. By loosening the lower 2 of the 4 small black screws holding the black part of the cluster onto the back and fitting 2 small washers this puts spase between the stalk and button hense turning it off. the car should now test the brake lights and display OK, plus youll have your system check back. Sorry for my poor use of the English language, hope you understand. nic
