    Factory Alarm Malfunctioning

After doing a search it would appear that the alarm on my car is a factory unit and is doing my head in!

It works when it wants too and has somehow set itself without using the remote. I am assuming that the key can set/unset with the microswitch?

As much as I would like to keep standard I am considering removing it completely and getting a more up to date unit installed instead.

Fortunately I have the actual key that switches the alarm syren off but can hear the relay clicking away when I am using it at the minute.

I have done the usual, new battery in remote etc but have no instructions on how it is used.

It is the Scorpion system as it has the 2 buttons, slider switch and small 3 pin connector on the side.

Is it a big job to remove? Concerned that if it keeps going off even in silent mode will slowly kill the battery etc.

Thanks for any pointers and sorry if this question has been asked before.

Are you sure it's a factory unit mate? I thought the factory unit worked off the central locking pump, and if you disconnect the central locking pump I don't think the ignition will come on.

This alarm has an passive-arming feature whereby it automatically arms itself 20 seconds after the ignition is turned off. However in case you have put your keys down in the car, it does not lock the doors.

When passive arming is active, the 20 second countdown starts when the ingition is switched off or the last door is closed (I think the door aspect only works if they were opened befor the ignition is switched off but I cannot remember). When the 20 second count starts, the LED will start flashing. The passive arming can be cancelled for that cycle by pressing the arm/disarm button on the remote.

There are 6 jumpers on the control unit and passive arming on/off is jumper no.4 (on is downwards)

May be wrong Ben (Wont be the first time but dont tell the wife!)

It may be a dealer fit system.

Just been out tonight and the remote and alarm have decided to work! So no idea why sometimes it does. Managed to turn it off now and will just unlock and lock with the key.

Check the dip switches on the controller unit.

They were dealer fit not factory fit and most UK dealers fitted them behind the clocks/above the drivers legs so pull the panel under the steering wheel and look up to the left. The controoler should be there

              Paul,

I have same unit fitted to my car (avant ),had similar symptoms to yours and then car wouldn't start for a day or two, till i could be ****d to investigate.
Turned out to be the interior ultra sonics, unplugged them from alarm system (eventually replaced them) a year down the line & its been fine.

              Maybe worth a look.
