A heads up to those of you with heated washer jets.

Just a heads up to those of you with heated washer jets...

I decided on sunday morning to take the car for abit of a shakedown through pangbourne/petworth as I haven't driven it for awhile and I was having withdrawel symptons.

Anyway, I got onto a stretch of dual carriageway between two fantastic roads and opened the car up abit at which point it started raining a litte. I backed off and flicked the windscreen wipers on only for nothing to happen...

I radioed ahead to my friends to let them know the wipers weren't working and they pulled over and waited for me. I indicated to pull over only to find that I also had no indicators/signals. Great..

I popped the bonnet over and checked fuse 15 only to see it had completely blown. Luckily my friend was there in his TVR and had some spare fuses (I guess it's standard to carry a whole workshop around with you when you drive a TVR? ) so I popped another 30amp fuse in and hey presto, everything was working.

Well...until I flicked the wipers on only to be met with smoke whisping out of the dash vent and from under the bonnet. I turned the car off straight away and opened the bonnet up only to see alot of smoke coming from the fusebox area. I waited for it all to clear up abit before noticing that it wasn't actually coming from the fusebox but instead the wire leading into the bonnet which would supply power to both the under bonnet light and the washer jets.

Rather than wait for a tow at 7am in the middle of nowhere I decided pull the new fuse and to head home with a friend of mine playing wingman by driving behind me and indicating for me which was nice. The only downside was that I had no windscreen wipers and couldn't see a thing if I drove below 70mph so I had to keep the speed up.

It did however dawn on me this morning as I was driving the car over to Iver to get inspected that fuse 15 also supplies power to the radiator fan which explained why the car was getting quite hot. I dropped the windows and turned the heat upto full whack in order to draw some of the heat out of the car so I was sweating my nuts off.

It's currently being checked over and I should know by the end of today as to whether or not the loom has been damaged or if it is just localised damage.

    Fecking cars..

    Shouldn't fuse 15 be 25 amps?

    Hope nothing's too damaged.

wouldn't be the first washer jets to short circuit... seen paint scorching on some cars (even on mine a bit) and have heard of bonnet resprays because of them short circuiting.
All quattro products have been dermatologically tested, and are safe for daily use.

hmmm interesting Rob, my headlight jets are not working, but so far wipers and fan still living and breathing. Will go check that fuse to be sure mines no going the same way.

I had a molten fusebox after the rad fan shorted out years back and it made a right mess, ended up needing a new plate etc.

        Good luck getting it sorted.

Wiring clearly isn't a strong point on these cars is it?

I have to say though, it's quite scary watching smoke come from under the bonnet and having a circle of friends around the car holding fire extinguishers at the ready...

I shall check the ampage on the fuse later today.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I don't think headlight washers are on a fuse (Paul?). Rob's problem seems to be with windscreen washers...?

I think the headlamp washers only have a relay, I haven't yet seen a fuse for them however I could be wrong.

If they arean't working then it's likely that either the pipe leading to the pump from the reservoire has come loose and all the fluid is pouring out the bottom of the car as you attempt to fill the reservoire or the pump itself has died.

I thought my pump was dead... I bought a new one, but after fiddling about down there it seems to work with the old one in...
I now have a spare pump.

Something worthwhile to check, glad you caught it before something serious happened.

I will be checking as much of my car when its being rebuilt so this is something else to add to the ever growing list.

yo, I've been having similar problem, but mine is with the seating of the relay on the main circuit, same one as your having probs with... wipers dnt work, heaters dnt work, indicators dnt work etc etc until such time as u wiggle the relay then it all bursts into life. not sure its related to ur problems. if u get a result let us know

It's the best thing to do Peter.

I'm really glad this was caught before the car either fried the Loom or caught on fire.

The good news is that I just picked it up from the garage and the problem was localised to the washer jets and that wire has now been isolated.

When I get the chance I'll order another set from VAG parts.
