might be wrong James but I thought only the 3b had a 3 pin connector, all others with the 500w had a two pin?

3 pin with two other connectors? think that goes off to the resistor thingy which is mounted on the side of the engine bay under the coolant bottle IIRC

Sounds right. I was thinking originally about the block connector on the back of the fan motor assembly, thought all others bar the 3b had a two pin but seems all have the same 3 pin....

Terrybullwon, are you installing the 500w fan in a car that originally had a 300w (three terminal fan plug)?

The 500w fans only has two posts, one positive and one earth. The positive post receives power from the series resistor (the blue plate with three terminals) or directly from the high speed fan relay. The high speed relay bypasses the resistor providing full power to the fan.

I do have a picture of the 500w fan at home that I can post tonight if you still need one.

                Bingo

Just what i am trying to do, i have a 100 amp relay. I was just going to cut the loom and place this in with a control. But If you can put a picture up of the RS2 loom and resistor with the three Pin conector that would be great

I've done this swap into my B2 90q. I used most of the wiring taken from a late model 200, which uses the 500w fan also. The fan in my 90q works as per the factory with all three speeds. Medium and high speeds when the motor is running and low speed when the motor is off. I also wired up an old hazard light switch on the dash that energizes the 70amp high speed relay for high speed running during cool down laps at the track or sitting in hot Georgia stop and go traffic.

The part number is 447 959 493 B and it is the same one found one just about all the 100s and 200s if you are looking for it at a breaker.

The resistance values can be found at Scott Mockery's site. Here's the link. The info is toward the bottom of the page. Here's the link

Did you get any further with this James? Ive basically done the same - replaced my original 3b fan (3 wire plug) with an ABY 2 post one. All I did was join the two 12v feeds and whilst it would run fine on full speed there's issues with the other speeds. Biggest problem tho is that Ive had to remove fuse 21 as with it in the fan funs constantly in afterrun mode, even with the ignition off. I know I have to wire in a resistor pack somehow but the two sets of schematics for the different fans just baffle me!

                        cheers

Paul i would check the relay system for the after run , If this is goosed you will get the fans running on for ever...and make sure the multi plug on the water rail is in good shape and not shorting acrosscausing the fan to stay on

Will do cheers - there's 3 grey relays marked 214 in the fuse box which I will swap around and the car was wired with a dealer fit aircon, now removed. I think fuse 21 has been blown since I swapped rads and Ive only just realised, causing the afterrun to stay on constantly

This sounds like what I need to do then, but as a pretty rubbish electrician Im just trying to get exactly what you've done here. By control switch do you mean you used the original 3 wires to the fan and wired the relay into that or did you run from the thermo switch in the bottom of the rad? What did you do with the original cigar shaped resistor (the one usually attached to the fan) which I think is for high speed on the 3b fan?

                              cheers
