Terry, you DID fuse the 12v battery to relay, right? Preferably close to the battery...100 Amps is ALOT of current...

Cheers for that! Im looking at the existing 3rd stage relay on the schematics tho Im not sure what ampage that is yet! But looks like I can wire in from that and add the missing resistor pack from the existing loom. From what Ive been able to figure out the pins are pretty close to yours, but the earth and thermo switch outs are different.

          30 (pin1) 12v fused
          87 (pin2) to Fan motor
          85 (pin3) to thermo switch
          86 (pin4) earth

Getting there slowly I think!! God my head hurts!!

Is there a "how-to for dummies" for this? Looking to fit a 500w fan into my CQ with a new rad.

Really I just want the fan to operate when required, not too bothered about speeds at this stage as I'm sure my CQ one has only ever run at full chat anyway

I custom wired my 500W fan in my B2 90q, but if I had to do it all again I would just use the fan harness from an ABY S2 or RS2. Doing it this way would save a lot of trouble.

I've drawn up a .pdf of what I did in my car I can send you if you think it would help. I sent a copy to James a couple years back too. I can dig it up, just let me know.

In the process of doing this swap myself. Could you send me the .pdf please?

                      Wiring Diagram

                      Tom,

Would you be able to upload the PDF here. I am having radiator fan wiring woes too!

                      Thanks,

Ha! I guess I could just post it here. That way everyone can see. Never tried to upload one before. Here goes!

Also, this is something that I drew up when wiring my 500W fan into my B2 90q so it's not exactly what the factory did. However it is very close the way Audi did it.

What's the problem with your fan John?

                          Tom,

Many thanks for this. I've just reallised that i have been a prize idiot on this. Paul's excellent site has the ABY schematics. I was looking under the wrong header.....not Wiring & Schematics but rather Current Flow Diagrams.

This was my initial problem synopsis: -

                          Details are: -

                          • Have 1994 ABY with A/C
                          • Relay 2 was missing but has been replaced
                          • Hi-1 fan motor does not come on at ~ 92 in traffic
                          • Motors continues to heat and boil until 104-105 when Hi-2 cuts in but struggles to pull temp down
                          • Lo speed comes on when A/C button is pressed
                          • All 4 thermo-switches (F18 / F54 - Fan Thermo switches, F76 - Multifunction temperature sensor (MFTS), F98 - TCP Thermo switch, G62 - Coolant Temperature Sensor) have been replaced as has the dump resistor

In summary the engine cannot keep itself cool when in traffic.

I’ve done some continuity / live / ground tests but I’m stuck now as Bentley only shows US/ Canadian models up to 1992 whose wiring does not appear to relate in colour or routing to the S2. The diagrams on S2 Central relate to a 3B and the diagrams that relate to an RS2 which is similar to the ABY do not cover this area.

                          My thoughts are: -
                          • Fan physically works (on Lo at initiation of A/C and when things are really hot)
                          • Connections to the fan appear unusual
                          • The dump resistor is new and has only been on one run so should not be burnt out (need some hints on measuring old one’ effectiveness)
                          • It may be that I need to take the scuttle relay / fuse panel out to inspect behind for gremlins
                          • It could be relay 14 in the panel under the dash – not been there yet.

Now i have the diagrams...more testing is in order and i'll write this up.

                          Cheers,

                          John
