    Fuse Box

Apologies for asking this question in a specifically S2 forum but you guys seem a knowledgeable lot and may be able to help with my ABK coupe (1995)

    Some background...

Early this year I foolishly (with hindsight!) jump started my coupe after returning to it to find a flat battery. I knew pretty quickly that something wrong had happened as I could smell electical burning and I couldn't turn the headlights off! (Of course I now know that you aren't supposed to jump start modern ECU-based cars especially across the battery terminals and with a mates huge 4x4 supplying the current! But hey I was desperate!). Anyway, the garage diagnosed the fuse box which it replaced with a second hand one and I paid up and put it down to experience!

    However...

Another (perhaps related?) problem has started now that the weather is a bit warmer in that after switching off the ignition sometimes (generally when the engine has warmed up but not always) the engine runs on for a second or so. Also once this happens starting it again while warm is really difficult. Sounds like timing so I took it back to the garage only to find that he couldn't read the codes from the OBD system. He had done this successfully on an occassion before the fuse box swap.

    Now...

After several return trips to the garage he hasn't been able to sort out either problem and he's run out of solutions. He seems to think that it could be the replacement fuse box being the wrong type - physically it looks the same and from what I can gather from the EuroCarParts site all Audi from around this time had the same part.

    So...

A couple of questions (if you're still with me!).

    1. Can anyone confirm if all fuse boxes are standard?
    2. Could an incorrect fuse box cause the OBD to not function properly?
    3. If I cannot solve this problem short term, can anyone suggest the reason for the run-on/hot starting problem given I have no fault code? I'd like to get this sorted ASAP.

Thanks in advance and excuse the longish post

I had a fusebox fire in my avant. right PITA. Ended up with all manner of electrical gremlins.

The fusebox is the same for most audis of that era, be A80, A100, coupe, convertible etc.

Chances are you have either melted the OBD wiring or they weren't reconnected to the fuse box terminals properly. I'd start by chekcing the OBD wiring into the fuse box for breaks etc.

You can say that again! Took a few attempts to get everything working after the fuse box had been replaced!

Thanks, that confirms my initial thoughts.

Yeah, sounds sensible, I'll give that a go...

Is there any other info you have regard changing these over..did you have to muck about with harness below fuse box to let the relay plate move up enough to change over ?

        Cheers

I had it changed at the garage. I did have to lift the fusebox on my TDi when I was retrofitting the front foglights.

The workshop manual states that you just have to lift it up but in reality it is not that easy. Teh wiring looms are too short to lift it clear. You'll probably need to people on the case so you can work from both the inside and outside at the same time.
