I'd replace the wiper stalk and headlight stalk unit on the steering column , I had the same problem with mine when I got it and this sorted it for £20.

Audi 80's had the hazard light switch is on a small stalk behind the wind screen wiper stalk.

You can use one of these units, you just end up with 2 working hazard light switches.

These are 10 a penny from most scrap yards.

          cheers

Early Coupe had the hazard function on a stalk too. They can be removed easy enough though. Remove square steel cover plate carefully, remove short stalk and replace steel cover plate.

But be careful here, if you get one from an 80 saloon, it's going to be no good, even from a later 80, the 80 never had a rear wash, so the "push forward" function of the main wiper stalk is missing.
Avant would be ok, it had rear wash/wipe.

Oh, and don't forget your replacement needs to have the computer function button on the end of the wiper stalk.

you can put any trip function stalk into a coupe housing though, you just need to disassebly it and put the stalk onto the RWW pivot end inside the housing - so you can fit the trip stalk into a bog standard coupe housing
