    What have I done?!

    HI all,

Just back from a few weeks away and my beast had died due to a poor battery.

Got my brother to bring his Corsa so I could jump start it - I proceeded to hook up the cables and tried to jump it only to realise that the polarity on his car was the other way round so long story short I had it round the wrong way and tried starting her.

Of course nowt happened and she fired ok after after realising my idoitic mistake.

Is there any damage that may have been done in doing this?

I'm hoping not but need a belts and braces check via the good folk on the forum...

Please tell me that Audi had realised that there are idiots out there like me and have built in some form of safety cut off to prevent any lasting damage?!?

I have done that before, (not sure if it was on the S2 or the 80 Sport) you *should* be okay though... It it goes okay now, I don't forsee any further issues.

    Cheers,

    Steve.

All the expensive electronics on the car are filled with protection diodes to avoid disasters from such a mistake. I think you will be fine.

Sure about that? They sell "electronics safe" jumper cables with varistors these days, specifically for use on ECU equipped cars. Many will claim that ECU's will be damaged simply by using standard jumper cables, due to the voltage spike from the spark that is often seen when attaching the last cable.
In fact, there is a fellow in this country that repairs such damaged ECU's for a living.

On the other hand, it would make perfect sense if the electronics actually had some protection like diodes, etc.

True - there is a limit to to how much the diodes can provide protection for... I myself have repaired a few S2/RS2 ECUs in my time - and its always been these diodes... Except one ECU that had lots of crap joints from water ingress -> rust.
