Quote - from a US "S" Forum while surfing

A few weeks ago, someone asked about lighting upgrades for the stock S4 headlamp system. Over the weekend, I did some work o n a '94 S4 Sedan, and was not overly impressed with the stock headlights. I measured the voltage at the low and high beam connectors and found a substantial voltage drop when compared to the voltage measured from the battery jumper post to engine ground. With the engine idling, and the headlights o n, the voltage measured at the battery jumper post to engine ground was ~14.1 volts, the voltage from the headlamp low beam (yellow wire) to ground (brown wire) was ~12.7 volts. The high beam (white wire) indicated ~12.5 volts. With the engine off the battery post measurement was 12.2V, the low beam voltage was 11.1 volts, the high beam voltage was lower at 10.8 volts. The Hella relay catalog I have, indicates that the luminous intensity drops considerably when the operating voltage of headlamps is below 100% voltage (13.5 volts). 95% voltage (12.8 V) gives 83% luminous intensity, 90% voltage (12.15 V) gives 67% luminous intensity, 85% voltage (11.48 V) o nly gives 53%. Installing relays and a local ground wire should improve the output from these headlamps.

I agree with this quote above and just thought I'd pass it on as it explains the situation very well. Following on from recent discussions on this Forum relating to HIDs and headlights.

I would suggest that people consider installing HIDs for the dipped beam, and relay their regular halogen bulbs for the main beam to avoid the "yellow" light as described above.

HTH some people on the Forum.

    Kind regards.

I have a relay set from http://www.audi100-online.com/Forum_...ml#Beleuchtung in my typ85, and have it waiting to be installed in my S2. excelent set, highly recommended. not only more light, but also takes care of the risk to burn the light switch.

@David: maybe change the topic title to something that describes the discussion?

Did what you are posting quite awhile ago since...

I installed my RS2 headlights. AudiWorld guys have been doing this upgrade for several years. They have numerous posting on it in their archives.

            Too late

for me to change the title.

Perhaps a mod could change it to something more suitable to describe the content of the thread correctly ?

In relation to saying it's old hat, I've also know about it for years, but I didn't always know about it and the intention was to mention it for the benefit of others who didn't know about it.

Not everyone knows everything about everything on this forum, especially me, , that's why I like this forum so much when running S2s.

Got that off my chest ! Calmer now.

            Kind regards to all.
