    Help, electric windows failed

    Hi All,

I know, use the search function...

My electric windows (both sides have stopped working. ('91, 3B coupe) The bulbs in the switches have also all gone out. I do not have a sunroof....

After spending some hours reading up on various peoples woes and problems, I have checked all that I can (I have no multimeter here) - checked the relay for dry solder joints, checked the switches for any obvious problems, visually checked the fuses

Can anybody confirm if there is a fuse which covers the windows, if so which one? I know of the thermal fuse, but the windows don't work when either hot or cold......

What would be the best course of action next? Don't really want to start replacing all relevant parts, I suspect the switches are ok as all 3 failed at the same time (intermittently at first, then permanently...)

Central locking works fine, as does the interior courtesy light and the electric mirrors...

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Chris

I'd check the cables in the doors and then the relay. Had the same problem on my Avant, first they stopped working occasionally, later they just quit working.
Everything else worked like it should, only windows and sunroof were out.
Tried re-soldering the relay and made sure, that every connection was OK, but still no luck.
In the end i swapped the relay for UrS4 unit, and they worked again.

Hmmm, sounds to me like I need to try a "known good relay"

Does anybody have one I could try? (or buy)

Mine has 285 written on it (I think, it is not in front of me to check....)

        Thanks,

        Chris

I would go with Zoig has posted..check cables in doors...

FIRST! This problem is well known in the States. The wires are so tightly wound in the hinge area that the constant opening & closing tend to wear the insulation out and wires start breaking there and you start having electrical shorts in there.

              OKI DOKI....

Stripped out drivers door, removed the wiring through to the inside of the car... All is fine... put it all back, so back at square one...

There is no power to the window switches, but there is power to the mirror switch...

Presumably, this means the X relay is working, and does point towards a faulty window relay? (the thermal fuse is fine)

              Does anybody have one?

              Thanks
