    Fuel Pump

I was planning on swapping my fuel pump today on my 91 S2 3B as the car is getting worse with trying to start. However, i went to locate it in the boot where i assume the access should be for it and i cannot find it. Upon lifting the carpet, you are faced with a black metal liner. Should the access be on this panel or do i have to unbolt this panel and it is underneath ?. Looking at the fitting guide in the guides and top tips, it appears to be in the liner but i maybe wrong. Can anyone offer some assistance.

Yeah you have to unbolt the panel and then open the access cover

If the 3B is like the ABY, you will find the need to remove right rear inner carpet so as to remove this tank panel... This is quite neatly fitted and care is needed to not damage the trim along the way.

ALSO - drain your fuel tank before removing the fuel pump... Doing any kind of work in there with fuel in the tank ain't big or clever. The fumes alone will give you a headache... And an untimely spark will give you more than that

Before you go crazy removing the pump... Measure voltage across terminals before you unplug the connector to see what it gets with and without the engine running.

Have you measued the fuel delivery rate yet ?

Thanks Paul. I swapped one on my old ABY avant and don't remember having to remove any liner panels on that so just assumed the coupe would be the same. No, i have not tested the flow rate yet but now i know how to get to the pump, i will check the voltage, the relay and the flow rate.
The car was stood for like 6 months un started over winter whilst i did all the suspension and brakes. Now it's back on the road it struggles to catch on whilst turning over. One started it is fine.

Just an idea here... 6 month old fuel could be really manky, but if it drives OK and pulls strongly then maybe thats not the issue.

I wouldn't blame the fuel pump if its just hard to start - smells more like a temperature sensor that is giving a bad value - or poor signals from the crank or cam sensors.

Other possibility is one or more fuel injectors sticking - causing it to be stupidly rich on startup.
