It's the same part that was on my car, so the spare I have I no good.

Hard luck, the dealer told me they were nla and hard to find on eBay.

Oh but in my searches I noticed some of the late 90s A8 stalks look very similar, it may be worth checking if any of them are actually the same.

is this from a 93/4 s2 avant?

Well, i still have my broken one with the correct part no, so if a different bit is broken you could combine the two.........

(My main beam switch had stopped working)

Did your car have an airbag or not as thats probably why some stalks don't fit.

Yep, airbag.. I gave the main dealer my reg and he said a new one would be £54+vat! Some people think NLA?

I'll try for another week or so then may have to bite the bullet if they are available.

give joe/audipartz a ring 07593804480 he has a few sitting around, just make sure you mention that your after one from an airbag steering wheel setup and mention that I told you to phone him. He should be able to sort you out.
