    Passenger side window stuck FULLY open - help!!!!

    The passenger electric window on my '91 S2 coupe has been a little reluctant to go down recently, and usually needs to be teased in order to go back up or down in the first place. So today, because of the heat, I decided I wanted both windows down (usually I don't bother...). Unusually for the problem window it went down quick as a flash, but I left a little room to allow it to be pulled back up. Got to tesco and couldn't see the window anymore........

    So essentially it's managed to retract all the way and guess what, it won't move
    Nowhere is open, or at least not too busy to have a look so I've got a locked car...... with a gaping wide hole in the side. Got it parked within my halls of residence until monday, so it'll be safe unless some drunken students choose to use it as a toilet overnight......

    Trying to get it to move with only the button to help the following happens:

    a) I can hear something going on in there but not the slightest bit of movement - it also has a grainy sandy sound coming from that window only;

    b) when pressing the button up-down-up-down-up-down-up the driver's side window moved a couple of times so maybe there's an electrical problem, perhaps in addition to any mechanical reason for the window staying still;

    c) had a look inside the door panel (through the gap the glass should be coming out of) and I could see a spring attached to a motor or something towards the front of the car and at the other end it looked attached to a cable or similar. When I pressed the button that spring would compress/extend so that part at least is functioning

    Does anyone know what this sounds like or experienced it before? Can anyone tell me a quick fix to crack open the door panel and shift the window manually so I don't have to worry so much?

    Any help will be greatly appreciated

    Thanks in advance!

    Jack

    for a start you might as well take the doorcard off as any solution is going to involve taking it off anyway. not difficult to take it off. just a couple of screwdrivers and allen keys.

      Sounds like the roller on the window mech has sheared off, or the cable has got tangled up, or more likely - both.

      The early window mech rollers are prone to this. Good news is it sounds like your motor is working ok.

      Either way you'll 99% need to swap the meechanism.

        Thanks, I'll try that. I don't have any tools with me, just the screw driver in the toolkit from under the boot and an allen key that I discovered under the sunroof control panel (it falls off from time to time). I took the screw from the rear of door off but couldn't see any others that needed removing, where are they? Will I be able to shift the window up manually if I do that? If not I'll leave it for now, don't know what I'm doing and I doubt I'll be able to identify anything helpful! If I need that motor and mechanism, I'll let you know I'm interested.

        Thanks again!

          there is also a screw in the door pull, behind the chrome handle. Then there are 3 allen head screws under the handle. You have to tug the door card upwards to get it off its clips without breaking them.

            yes, fixings as per error404's reply. the ones in the door handle are underneath the handle in small recessed holes. it may pay to get underneath and shine a torch in to see what your doing at first. when they're all out you've got to move/slide the card up about an inch to unhook the plastic clips all around the card. go carefully, if you just try and yank them out they'll snap.

                Where abouts in west yorkshire are you? I'd be very redundant to leave the car with the window down that long. What if it rains? Have you got any tools with you to take he door card off so you can have a proper look?
                Just some finishing touches to do now

                      About 2 1/2 hours later and I've got the screws out! Those *******ing allen key ones didn't want to be found and then decided to play hide and seek
                      The door card however doesn't want to come off. Or I'm pulling in the wrong direction...

                      It did rain on me, three times.... I'm in Huddersfield, but it's in a secure car park (at least it's supposed to be) and I don't have a choice anyway.

                      Thanks Phil, but I don't know that part of Yorkshire so I'd probably get lost, I'll pop down to Quattro Dan instead as I've been there before.

                      Thanks for all the help guys!

                        I had mine stop working a while ago, luckily stuck closed!

                        The motor was working, you could hear it. I had the door cards off and the motor out, the guy that fixed it took the motor to pieces to find the wire had tangled up inside.

                        Fiddly to fix, took an hour or so, but fine ever since!... until next time.
