Dont know about S4 specific, but the Audi 80 switches are held on by two small screws on the top of the ignition barrel. For an 80/S2 you have to remove the instrument cluster to get at them.

The urs4 / urs6 were recalled in the US to have these switches replaced. I read an article recently about how to change the switch without removing the cluster. Albeit for a LHD car. I've a link saved on my work computer, so will post here tomorrow. Is your switch sticking in the starter position. That seems to be the typical failure and what is wrong with mine. I've a new switch waiting here to go in so will be following this closely.

Mine is going faulty with the ignition on. Eg with ignition on if I turned the lights on the ignition would go off. Eg air con, wipers etc would go off. The engine isn't affected though. Basically the main relay was switching off as it lost is coil feed from the ignition switch. Eg main red wire and yellow/black wire would go open circuit on switch.

After I wiggled the switch about everything worked again.

I have just replaced mine on a urs6. Got the part form Audi and I have to remove the instuments to get to it. You dont need to remove the whole barrel but if you look at the picture you will see the white plastic part at the end of the ignition that is what you need to remove and you can see the location of the screws.
