audi a4 fuel gauge not working

gauge not working at all, just fitted new sender unit as contacts on old one were worn so brand new one installed. the needle moves ever so slightly when ignition on and power going to it.

could it be the gauge itself?

I know TT's and A6's have big problems with the temp and fuel gauge, fault is somewhere in the dash unit. You can use vagcom to connect to the dash and run an output test to check the gauges are working properly. I bet thats your issue..

A friend has a TT with the same problem, found company that will "repair" the dash cluster for ~£150. Also found these searching around http://www.codecard.lt/electronics/c.../prod_393.html, but i dont know if the fault is that motor or the logic that drives it.

      cheers for that !

i can pick up a used cluster for £25 , on the s2 its simple enogh to swap over, but ive read that on the newer stuff (i hate new stuff!) you have to callibrate.

surely i can just switch them over?

on my 98 a6 1.8t the clocks had to be coded to the car when changed, its only a couple of minutes with vagcom though

Swapping the cluster looks like a headache. From what i can tell vagcom will let you do the immo/key coding bit, but to change the mileage you need a VDO cable. Basically another vagcom type setup, about £25 on ebay.

managed to get this working today

turns out the new sender i bought didnt work at all !! I replaced the cluster having done my homework that a4 and a3 gauges give up early and it still didnt fix it. i was given an old sender after fitting the new one and slapt it in and hey presto !!

Changing the clocks was no issue at all, didnt need re-coding or anything. ideal !!
