A4 forum? Need advice on electrics

Maybe this just goes to show how good the s2 forum is, you think you can type in a4 forum and what comes up is a complete crock of ****.

Im trying to see how complicated it is to replace the instrument cluster on the a4(adr 1.8 poverty spec,no remote locking etc).the fuel gauge is dead.

The s2 one is a simple task but on the a4 apparantly you have to re-code the keys etc as the cluster is part of the immobiliser system

had just planned a straight swap but will i have to take it apart and just replace the gauge itself? Or will that still need a re-code?

Fekkin newer audis eh......who'd have em

It depends on the model fella,

if yours is a facelift B5 (1999 to 2001) then it has a 3 stage immobliser system, and the cluster being one of them.

          however......
they are re-code able with VAG dash (like vag-com but for the clocks!!!)

gimme a ring on 07563 799 485 if you wanna speak to a human that knows whats going on
          Anytime fella
also, Audi-sport is excelent for advice, although some users are very up themselves lol

          Regards Sean.
p.s dont take advice from americans, there setup is totaly different from UK spec A4`s ok!!!

            Andy,

PM me your reg or chassis number and I'll see which immo it's got. Coding keys is not difficult but you do need the SKC which dealers can't give you anymore. VAGDash/VAGTacho etc can extract the immo SKC from the cluster so you can program new keys.

I've just bought an A4 tdi so I know what you mean about them being a bit different to A80/S2 but electrically they are very similar. I need to get the SKC sorted for mine as I am retrofitting OE remote locking with flip type keys.

                sean,
cheers for that, when i removed the fuel sender the contacts on it were worn away completely (car has 172k), whats the chances of clearing any fault codes and it working again? ive put a brand new sender in,but wonder if the old one did any damage ?

well just got back from a vagcom session with Merlins S4 (cheers tristan)

and we came up with the fault code 0771 "open or short to b+"

when googleing this code it just comes up with wiring fault between fuel sender and gauge. Surely it cant be the new sender? Must be the gauge itself??

might be worth mentioning that jontawn is getting in handheld supervag units that I think can do all the recoding you'd need.
