Smoke From Wiper Stalk!

I have had a problem with my wipers not returning to home so I replaced my relay and wiper motor, but it was still not working. I then decided to take the stalk apart and it was really gunked up inside and the two sprung connections on the stalk where not seating properly. I cleaned it out, plugged it in, turned on the car and joy as the wipers returned to home

But then electrical smoke started to come out of the wiper stalk connection, so rushed to get the battery off!! anyone know what is going on?
