    Gearbox distance speed sensor wires / pins

    Can anyone help me out with which pin is which on the speed / distance sensor on the gearbox? I took the pins out to extend the loom for my 6speed swap and lost the piece of paper where i wrote down which went where

    Its the 3 pin plug on passenger side of gearbox, IIRC there is a black/blue wire, a brown wire and a brown /red wire - anyone tell me which goes to which pin?

    Cheers

    Hahaha yeah the VEMS guys know about this one!

    The 3pin female connector has

    * pin1 black-blue +12V (when ignition is on, fuse-relay panel pin B15A fuse#12) supply for HALL sensor
    * pin2 brown-red pulled up by the car with 100 Ohm (strong pullup!)
    * pin3 brown: GND

    6 gear audi transmission sensor seems to have a simple reed-switch between pin2-3.

            To clarify.... the speed sensor at the gearbox is a 'hall effect' device - NOT to be confused with similar technology used for detecting camshaft position in the engine.

              Its actually a reed switch inside, when it passes a magnetic field the two pieces of metal join together and complete a circuit. I was quite surprised when i seen that, didnt think it would open/close quick enough to work in that application.

                Are you sure about that... I know they changed a bit across the years. My memory could be wrong here, but I think I've seen at least one reference in OFRM to this being a hall effect device.

                  Yep, it came out of Davids car, gearbox was left hanging and ripped the plug/sensor out of its outer casing. I think its still there so i'll snap a pic next time i'm over.

                    Both my 7A and 3B have had a reed switch in them, as Mark describes. I've had them apart.
