a simple squirt of wd-40 on the contacts in the steering column solved mine, spray it in....give the stalk a good waggle (technical term ) and it could start again. Audi wanted to charge me £275 for the privilage so i tried that as i was told it has resolved the prob time and again and 4 years later it still works!

      Good luck,

        Thanks guys
Keep the suggestions coming - I hope that it is one of the two suggestions so far as they are no cost repairs!
I won't get a chance to try them til the weekend so I will update then.
        Thanks again

It has its own relay. Could be broken.

Stick Insect maybe right on here.

It's an old problem on cars of this vintage. Another area to check just in case is inside the wiper motor itself. The lube grease that Audi used at the time maybe as thick as cold molasses now and will need to be cleaned out and replaced with a more up to date grease.

The wash jet doesn't work so it could be

              faulty stalk?
              Faulty wiring?
broken pipe ( does the motor run when you 'squirt'?) if it does then it could be a broken pipe.

if the motor doesn't run is there voltage to the pump? try a connection to the pump and check it works.

On My Mondeo the rear jet had blocked and I cleared it with an airline, afte the bits had flown out into the dark fluff laden corner of the garage and a quick bit of re-assembly it was fine. That fluff tastes nice.....

              Good luck.

Have known on Audi 100 avants for the rear wsher to block due to heavy corrosion formed inside the motor(water runs through the centre spindle). Only cure was either drill out carefully or replace with new motor.

That would stop the motor working and the washer washing. I didn't know the avant was different in that way.
