As i'm new to the S2, does the diagram in the centre consul of the wheels / 4x4 system not light up when the lights are turned on ? Also by pressure the button it locks the rear diff ?

Yes, it should light up with the lights and a further light should come on in the center of the rear diff on the diagram when the button is pressed and the diff is locked.
Only works when car is stationary and traveling very slowly.
if yours is not lighting up then its most likely that the bulbs inside the switch have died.91 S2 coupé - RIP
