Has anyone tried the H1 100W bulbs in the ellipsoidals?
After seeing how good high watt bulbs are when relayed in a mk2 golf I fancy trying higher power in mine - But I would like to know if anyone has melted the plastic in ellipsoidals with these?
Dont know about the later style lamps, but my old lights have 130/100 H4's and 100W H1's for main beam in them, with relays. The light output is great, its like daytime driving. But I have noticed it has damaged the reflectors both sides. And they were new lamps 18months ago. Not much, but they are discolouring. Never mind, gives me an excuse to upgrade in the future.

Keep your hands off from 100W in ellipsoids!!!!
The mirror is plastic and the housing is that close that the heat can't dissipate. Result: the mirror will partly melt, see this link:
Isnt 100w illegal in halogen bulbs for the car as anything over 70w is classed as motorsport lighting and hence too bright for road use. Dont know if its true but i chatted with an MOT tester when i had my Nova SR (and a great car it was) and he told me i couldn't after an hour of research in books.

As you said Doug, you need relays. I melted my stalk with high power bulbs and that was on dip 90W!. The wattage is not a problem for the MOT I believe. IIRC bulbs over 65? Watts are not 'E' marked and as such cannot legally be fitted to post 1973 cars.
If you fit a relay don't forget to disable the Autocheck light system.
IN a few months.... I'll have some new kits that we've designed that are going into production :-)
We've got off shore marine kits, race car use only and light commercial aircraft kits coming. These will be base on 50 watt ballasts which will be about 50% brighter than current HID's!! beelinding!! I'm hoping very much that the 50 watt ballasts will provide so much extra grunt that the ellipsoids in our lights will finally put out a decent amount of light down road. Heat will not be a concern at all as still 5 watts less than the current halogen H1 bulbs. I look forward to testing these :-) aircraft landing lights inside my headlamps :-)
Yum Yum , i would like a set of those, not sure other drivers would but hey, who cares :mischeif: . I have been looking in our stores at work at what is in there with reguards HID lights as we use alot of them and the smallest ballasts we have is 400W and run off back up generators.
So your 50's look like the better option.

Brightness doesnt come into MOT, as long as both lights are of the same brightness. Yess that is true std H1 is 55w and std H4 is 55/60w IIRC. But the law states no higher than 65w. But what copper is gonna come along and remove my bulbs to check them out.

Jeez Graham 400 watts!! they must light up the county!!
Its just a shame they will melt my lenses , the biggest are 2200w but 440vac supply. Would you need lenses if they were that bright I think not. just a fekin huge genarator to power them, they are used in the steel plant where it might be 300ft from the light fitting to the floor.

as far as i can remember the law states that any bulb over 4w (side lights)must be capable of being dipped , so a 180/100w bulb would be legal.
I was thinking more of uprated H3's in the front fog's actually. Do you think 70 or 80w bulbs will melt the plastic of the fog lamps ? I realise they would be for "off road" use only
