    Front Wiper Woes

    Hi there

I was wondering if someone might be able to spare me some of their wisdom and answer a few of my questions.

I borrowed my old mans 1992 S2 back in December to get to work as my Polo Tdi broken down. Anyway I went to use it the first day and the wipers decide to stop working (what luck). They tried to move a couple of inches and then just seized up.

Now I removed the motor and mechanism suspecting that they may have seized. I connected the motor straight to the battery and it works fine. Similarly the mechanism was in good condition and moving freely.

Next I tried jumping the relay, which made no difference. So I tried the relay (191 955 531) from my sisters Polo, which made no difference.

Anyway the problem is due to other commitments I had to leave repairing this until now. And I have gone and lost the original relay Could somebody possibly tell me what the correct relay is for the wipers, ETKA throws up 191 955 531, although I am pretty sure it was something different.

I am guessing that the next port of call will be the switch itself. If not I am totally stumped.

Can anyone please shed some light on this for me. Are the switches, or any thing else on these cars common failure points? I have searched but would appear to be going around in circles with this

Any thanks for any information given

    Hi Mark,

I don't have any direct experience of this problem, but I am sure someone will be along soon that has!

    Cheers,

    Steve.

      Ok then an update.

I have now had a chance to spend some time on this. I have removed the switch and tested it. There is no continuity over any of the pins in any of the switch positions. I put a jumper over 53a and 53b on the wiring harness and the motor springs into life.

So it looks like we have a winner. I have taken the switch apart and it is full of black hardend grease, and the contacts look goosed.

So my next question is where is the best place to get a replacement, or does anyone have a spare they would like to sell. The stalk has the small hazard flasher stalk, and the buttons for the computer. Part number is 445 953 503 F.

      Thanks,

      Mark

It might be worth dropping a pm to Acidburn, he always seems to have or know where to find parts.
