  • Alternator spec, ABY

Can someone give me the amp rating for the alternator with the ABY engine?

    Thanks.

Just to be a pedantic partsman.

The alternator for ABY Coupes is as follows:

110A Bosch up to chassis number 8B-R-000177

90A Valeo from 8B-R-000178 up to to 8B-R-051000

        or

        120A Bosch from 8B-R-000178 onwards.

For ABY Avants the alternators are:

110A Bosch up to chassis number 8C-P-300000

        90A Valeo from 8C-R-000001 onwards

        or

        120A Bosch from 8C-R-000001 onwards

Are the ABY alternators driven by a ribbed or a v belt? I could use one higher amp one as my 3B has a 90A and consumption is quite high and becomes even higher when I soon install a petrol aux heater...
Strange that I even have a 90A one as aicon 3B should have 110. I know 2 more 3B aircon cars that have 90A. Errmm..

ABY uses a ribbed belt but it should be possible to swap the pulley over to the v-belt version. Not sure if this would work with the standard 3B pulley but it looks as though it may as the both use the same woodruff key, washer and fixing nut.

My ABY had aircon but only had a 90A alternator. I've ditched the AC and fitted the 120A alternator.

There could be a slight aligning problem or then not. Can't really tell without trying.

According to my equipment codes I have the 120 A version and it's driven by a multirib belt. This is consistent with the VIN info Ben gave above. Haven't checked the amp rating on the alternator. I have aircon.

You shouldn't swap the front pulleys without having the engine re-balanced. The pulley is an important part of the crank balance. If it's swapped without checking the balance of the rotating components, you're likely to create problems that you may not be aware of while driving. Also, the ABY front pulley is a monster compared to the 3B item!

Are you talking 3b alternator pulley? This little pulley will un balance the engine?

Its easier to change alternator pulley only
