    Heated rear window constantly on???

My heateed rear screen is now constantly on. When you press the switch the light within the switch stays on no matter what position the switch is in?

What could be causing this? Anyone BTDT?

As a slight aside, this fault seems to have appeared after I installed my RS2 seats, so I could have disturbed something in the lower parcel shelf area, or even tapped into the supply for the rear window in knowingly.....

    Cheers,

Haven't BTDT, but i'd take a guess at broken switch/electrical short.
If the light in the switch is staying on, the switch can't be disconnecting the power supply.

My feeling is the relay has been disturbed or is bad. Just wanted a few opinions before I go delving around. More specifically, which one is the bloody relay for the HRW under there....

I think process of elimination - disconect the connections made when fitting the seats - try another relay & switch - bear in mind though, these cars can have some illogical electrical oddity's at times ????

True. I can pull the spade connect power feed for the seats and if its disconnects the rear window I am halfway there!

          Thanks,

The HRW shouldn't be electrically connected to the seats at all... right?
I'd remove the connections to the switch, and see if the HRW is still on. (and check that your seats still work just in case there is some weird dependancy)
And then check the switch with a meter.
If all is well, then relay hunt...

No, the HRW should not have any connection to the seats at all. At least that is not what I planned.

I do not know what I shared the electric seats with as yet.

                Steve,

There is no relay as such for the HRW, it's all inside the switch itself. The circuit - from good old S2central.net - is very simple, supply to the switch via 30A fuse S16 which gives a timed feed to the HRW and the two door mirrors, a ground connection and a feed via S12 to illuminate the switch.

Unless something is holding the switch down mechanically, it looks like you've got a fault inside the switch. Perhaps someone on here could lend you a spare so you could test by substitution, otherwise I'm happy to lend you mine out of my car - I don't need it at this time of the year

Can't see any linkage to your new seats..............other than seat envy

                John

Thanks John, that is exactly the info I was looking for. I really struggle trying to understand the Audi schematics, my electrical knowledge is not the greatest, but those diagrams....

Strangely I pulled the S16 30A fuse last night and the light in the switch is still on! EDIT: Just re-read your previous post, I need to pull fuse S12 to see the light go off. All I am going on at the moment is the light inside the switch!

I need to do some more investigation tonight, as I don't like the thought of it being on all the time (if it is). I have not had the chance to go over the car with a multimeter yet to investigate either.

                  As for the seats:

OK so S16 drives the HRW and associated light.

S12 is fuse for the illumination supplied to all the switches and instruments when the ignition is on, so if the "S12" light is on, it doesn't mean the HRW is on.

Mystery solved (almost). I had a play last night and discovered if I opened the boot the switch started working correctly. I also noticed that if you have the HRW ON and you open the boot it blows the 30A fuse!

I have concluded the wiring in my boot hatch is screwy and this has nothing whatsoever to do with my Recaro seat installation!

I will address sorting out the wires in the boot at some point.

                      Thanks for everyone's insight.

                      Cheers,

Glad you found it i was going to suggest this as I have had it before on mine. The wiring in the rubber boot at the top of the door when you open it had cracked then melted the casing off the wire causing a short...

@Steve - pull the fuse for the HRW if you have a short in that area of the wiring until it is repaired - otherwise you run the risk of other electrical carnage and/or melted insulation throughout the loom if some thin cable is illicitly supplied lots of amps to your HRW circuit.
