actually - thinking further - its the fuse for the other circuit that seems to be shorting the HRW you need to remove as well... could be for trunk light or anything at the rear really.Paul Nugent

I can't to that, I need to drive it home from work!
It is actually on the road and being driven at the moment, despite the forum rumour that I only take it apart or polish it and put it back in the garage again!
I will pull the 30A fuse but the other one runs all the instrument warning lights etc...The Perfectionist

BUMP.
I had had a look under the rubber boot between the hatch and the body and the loom looked perfect still wrapped in the factory tape. If this looks undamaged should I look elsewhere for a fault or do I need to strip the loom protection tape off and check further.
What have other people with similar faults found. I was expecting to see the wire chaffed through and damaged....
Thanks,

Hi Steve.
Have you verified that your HRW switch is working properly?John Bowlerwell

Yes once the hatch was opened and shut again and the fuses replaced it worked correctly. The wing mirror adjusters are now non functioning as they share a circuit with the rear wiper which has now blown that fuse due to the suspected wiring fault in the body to hatch area. The Perfectionist

Ah...
Is there anywhere that the rear hatch loom can be disconnected (car side) to prove that the short is a. in the loom, or b. in the hatch?John Bowlerwell

No. (AFAIK) I think you have to break into the loom where it goes between the hatch and the body.
*Awaits clarification from someone*

Hey Steve.
I'm just looking back at old pictures (If you can tell me how I can upload them, I can post them, or email)...
It looks to me like my wires were still in the factory tape. The tape had come loose a bit outside the rubber boot, but looks like the tape is intact inside the rubber boot. I can't verify this for sure. My memory is bad and my pictures aren't very comprehensive... sorry!John Bowlerwell

If your pics are on your Hard drive, reply but "Go Advanced" then scroll down until you see "upload Files". Use that button and browse to the location of your pics on your PC. You can upload up to 5 images per post.
If you could that would be really helpful. I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and strip the factory loom tape off and see what lies beneath. I am convinced it is something to do with the boot hatch as you can replace the fuses and run the HRW and the rear wiper perfectly until you open the boot, then some or all of the fuses blow the next time you operate either again....
Cheers,
SteveThe Perfectionist

This is before I removed the whole bunch from the rubber boot. You can see my 1 blue doner wire.
I have had to peel/tear/cut the black tape at the top in order to find the problem.
In my case the broken wire was properly broken and I managed to pull the top half back through.
When I realised what state it was in, I just cut the wires and replaced the internal sections.
Hope this helps.

I'd go for that as well, i've just had an issue like this with the passat which was a wire had caught on a new bolt that had been put in the car and was causing all sorts of fuses to blow, got it sorted in the end.
Does sound like there is a wire thats causing your problems.Comment
