Had a quick look at Cabrio diagrams and can confirm the following --->

Up to MY97 they use same setup as S2/RS2 with intermittent wiper relay in position 9 and headlamp washer in position 4 (unfused).

From MY98 it changes where positions 4 and 9 are now unused and a multifunction fatboy relay appears in AUX positions 13&14. You can see this version has a different switch with the intermittent control pot and a different application for the new fangled 'INT' (intensive) button versus the old stalk where 'INT' meant intermittent.

For MY99 and 2000 the wiring is same as MY98 except the fatboy relay is moved to AUX positions 9&10.

In summary, it doesnt look like you can use the new 'INT' stalk without the new special relay and still retain the intermittent wipe function. Let me see if I can dig up part numbers for relays and such.... though should be easily lifted from a broken late model Cabrio.

I can scan schematics in if they are interesting to others.

Here are the schematics fro MY97, MY98 and MY99/00

For MY97 you just need that one sheet labelled 46/15

For MY98 you need 58/15 & 16 for the windscreen and 61 for the headlamps

      For MY99 & 2000 you need 62/15 & 16 as well as 61

ALSO - From the parts system I can also see the following...

      - Later washwipe relay is 4B0 955 531 E - and is common to Mk4 Golf too - should be readily available on eBay and such

      - Intermittent washwipe stalk plus computer buttons for MY98 onwards is 4D0 953 503B - this is also common on other models but Stefano can confirm what number he has on his stalk.

            '4A9' - really ?

A search in that places it only applicable to Audi 100 & V8 models... specifically calls up 'intensive' washer system... need to look at schematics on those. Begs the question if the 4A9 part works in the B3/B4 with regards physical fit and connectors etc.

The Cabrio number I posted 4D0 953 503B may not be correct though.

paul: yes that is the stalk with the intensive button on it, and fits perfectly in the b3 and b4 chassis. i cant remember exactly, but i think the buttons wires go to the BC connector...

Remarkable stuff - many thanks Skull... I'll look at 100/A6 diagrams later to establish the stalk pinout and how best to integrate with B3/B4 up to 1997 and/or make an intercooler sprayer from it with the minimum of electric spaghetti.

easy peasy. the button has 2 wires. you put one on ground, the other on a 4 pin relay. you basically use the button to give the relay a ground that starts the relay. if you are into relays you know what i mean. if not, i can draw you a scheme

I used the 'INT' stalk from 96 A6 limo on my 93 80 Avant, keep the original base and just change the stalk in it. Also by the look of it, the 99-00 B5 S4 stalk with adjustable intermittent timer can be swapped to older cars.

Just been looking at diagram carefully and you can easily retrofit headlamp washer relay onto the cabrio fusebox. The existing stalk sends 'wash' signal to fusebox already for screen.

All you need to do is add 1 wire to the "D" plug from the fusebox via a fuse and route that to the headlamp wash motor. Actually there should be a white 1-pin plug for this in the spaghetti under the fusebox. Only other wire needed is a ground for the motor.

You might even find the factory loom has an unused 2-pin plug already in the right location.
Info says that heated washer jets need some extra wires but that is a different thing.

                        @stefano...

I think you will like this info... Finished work early and the sun is shining so I set about looking to see if I could find 'T1i' on my 1992 V6Q that does NOT have headlight washers.

Sure enough it is there in main vehicle loom - a white body 1-pin plug in the spaghetti above drivers pedal inside the car. This wire comes from 'DP' terminal out of the headlamp washer pump relay position. As per track 175 on the MY97 cabrio wiring I posted.

I buzzed it out with a meter to make 100% sure... All you need to do is add a fuse to this point and run the cable to the headlamp washer pump via a bulkhead grommet. Oh and then plug in ordinary headlamp washer relay - can look up part number if you need it.

I double checked the logic on my S2 (with headlamp washers) - same white 1-pin plug exists - only it is attached and it goes to 12V only when headlights on and wiper stalk pulled to 'wash'.

                              Yep Paul.

I choose the easy way and just found an accomodation (plenty of space in that engine bay!) for the 275 relais plus a relais holder with an integrated fuse (10A) holder.
Took the signal from the stalk directly from the screenwasher pump and the rest it's a chip chop job.

connections as confirmed by you and schematics supplyed by you, are for future reference the follow:

                              #31 ground
#S signal from stalk (or from +12V on the windscreen washer pump)
                              #56 positive from headlights/ligths
                              #30 positive continuos 12 V
                              #P pump/motor

The 275 relais give an action to the pump of exactly 1 second.
