Exact same thing happened mine. Turn ignition off, and on and on it starts right up. My error codes where showing intermittent short to ground on G40 (camshaft sensor). I have just changed it today and hopefully it sorts it.

Yes it did. In my case my g40 was failing and shorting to ground as opposed to open circuit, this is in my opinion what causes the engine to stop.

@PRJ - yep, I would like to pull codes, I have a laptop, no software and no cable. Would you send me some links on a PM where I can get these please? I've not rooted it yet and may well end up bricking it!!

@Irish - thanks, good to hear that worked for you. Having read up on your threads and the advice from others makes me feel a new Hall would work for me too.

Uhm, it is no point to buy that software.
VCDS 10.6 you can download for free on Ross-Tech's site but it will only work with a VCDS cable. The cable is what registers the software, the software can not work with an old style eBay cable anyway.

For these dumb mode cheap cables you can download this:

Of course if you want to have the full version you need to register your copy for 99 USD, but you can easily pull codes with the free version.
There are shadier means as well... as always, but no need to discuss that here.

Replacing stuff without codes is just going to cost you money.
It might not even be the problem, that's the thing.

Is there no one close to you with a scanner who doesn't mind plugging it in for a few seconds?
