    ABY Alternator

One word of warning if you want to upgrade your alternator. My ABY S2 is '93 and uses a 13mm V-belt on a 90 amp alternator. If your car has a V belt it will have trouble powering 120 amps. As a general observation over the years with diesel stuff 90 amps seems to be the limit for a V belt. After that you need a poly V.

Personally I'd get your old alternator reconditioned. The quality of the armature and magnets is considerably better on the older units, once refreshed they should go on for another 20 years.

Got an old ABY one taken apart by the local alternator and starter reconditioning place. Took the two metal casings and glass bead blasted them at a friend’s company, came out like new, gave the casings back to the reconditioning place to allow them to rebuild up the alternator, std price is €140.00.

Any ideas on how to seal the finish on the casings, as while it is like new, it is very “raw”, and may dirty quickly especially when it is so clean.

They said the “old” alternator when reconditioned could be more robust that the new designs, which might have been designed / built more to a price. Who knows, I’ll see how I get on with the newly rebuilt one when I get to pick it up and also to fit it.
