    Intermittent Electric Window Issue

    Hi guys,

I own a 1996 2wd 2.0E. I've had it for almost two years and it's my pride and joy.

Recently the electric windows have stopped responding to me pressing the switch on the drivers door. They'll jump into life after a short time, then cut out occasionally. I assumed this might be the relay (where is this?!) but I tried the sunroof when it happened today and it was inop as well.

Does the sunroof run through the same relay and is this a likely cause, or is there something more sinister or common afoot?

    Thanks in advance

    sidrick,

I think there are small little cheaper looking thermal fuses in the are under the driver’s knee on the relay boards that may be the cause of the fault. Replace with a new one, or a second hand one and it may resolve the problem for you.

Others on here should be able to post a photo of them to help you.

    Kind regards.

Sunroof is on the same relay, it's behind the shelf under the steering wheel, approx where your right knee is - If the window switches are not illuminated with the ignition on, then you will find the roof & windows won't work - Remove the relay & clean the contacts

Windows move at correct speed when they work.

          Thanks benntenn67, I'll take a look!

            Additional info.

It’s a small little thin two spade relay/switch/fuse, in a cheap looking aluminum silver casing with a bit of coloured paint on the top. I think it’s made in Indonesia or somewhere unusual.

The relevant photo would be so much more informative.

Robbed from urS4boy’s link in another S2forum thread active now, when you scoll down and see the fuseboard photos, you’ll see the little “fuses” I was referring to at the back of the fuseboard.

              HTH.

              Thanks Dave.

Not exactly what you wanted but here are some thermal fuse photos anyway:

Perfect to demonstrate which ones I had in mind. The two small ones in the foreground of the photo.

                  Thanks Dave.

Hopefully all of this helps the original poster.

I was thinking this relay is the culprit, rather than the thermal fuse ?? http://www.s2-audi.co.uk/tech_articl...al/sunroof.jpg

...... but I have had a few beers

Probably but the 441959257C in the photo below has been superceded to the 441959257D, under dash relay panel, position 5&6 (see second photo below the first):

Not sure about the number on the 257C but it should be in the position of the "287" shown in this photo (the 324 is the after run pump relay, PN 447965571A):

The sunroof does run through the same relay, hence they both stop working together.

It could be the thermal fuse as mentioned above but also as likely is that the contacts on the relay are prone to breaking. If you have a soldering iron, open up the relay and resolder all the contacts where they join the circuit board.

There's a post on here where others have had the same problem and it's worked. Also worked for me.

Yes, it's a double size relay, 287 in your picture.
