    Cam Position Sensor

    Evening All,

is it ok/wise to (as a temporary measure) cut the cables to the Cam Position sensor and splice them with a donor set so that I can fit a new male connector? The casing on my connector has disintegrated yet the unit, as a whole, works ok (currently held in position with insulation tape ). As I would need to remove the front bumper etc etc to replace the whole unit i was wondering if I could just replace the broken connector for now? If this is do-able does anyone have a spare I can buy or have?

    Cheers

There's nothing particularly special about the three wires used so as long as you make a reliable connection (solder/crimp) it's absolutely fine to do - safer than risking the cam woodruf key when you undo/redo the camshaft pulley.

G40 Cam Shaft Sensor Info including PNs and DIY

This link contains links to a DIY that shouldn't need bumper removal. It also contains the PN for the replacement 3 pin connector.

I recently replaced my hall sender with that cheap HME301 unit, and it works - thats a very good DIY description
On my car the male 3-pin connector doesnt exist anymore.. insulation tape is not pretty, but works for me
You don't need to remove the bumper btw.

Cheers UrS4boy, Yet again some really good info.
I'll see if I can get a connector in the week in time for ADi otherwise it will have to be the taped up job…
I'm hoping this is potentially my permanent fix for this issue as there's nothing wrong with the sensor apart from the connector casing and i'm loathed to spend £100 on the whole part just to replace the casing.
I'll let you know how I get on but in the mean time if anyone has a source for this male pin connector P/N 443906247 please let me know.

          Cheers

If you get stuck, a Mk 3 VW Golf or Jetta O2 three pin sensor uses the same shape male pin plug. Only downside is the pins are potted so you will have to splice the old wires to reduced lengths of the O2 sensor plug. Slip some heat shrink tubing over the wire and away from the soldering heat (if soldering) for a more professional look.

The AAN, ABY and ADU knock sensors, engine speed sensors and crank position sensors etc. also have the same shaped male pin (potted) plugs that you could adapt if you had a dead sensor laying around.
