I think there is somewhere, but the short version is:

    - remove 2 screws under the steering column cover (phillips) and remove the top plastic cover.
    - unplug the RED connection to the airbag
    - 2 TORX screws behind the steering wheel to loosen the airbag. unplug and remove the airbag. *** It is possible to remove the instrument cluster without taking the steering wheel off, but it is MUCH easier with the wheel off.***
    - unscrew the big nut in the middle of the steering wheel and remove the steering wheel.
    - unscrew the 2 phillips scres in the bottom of the instrument cluster
    - ease the instrument cluster out, and unplug all the plugs that are in the rear of the cluster. Some of these plugs have the purple clip in the middle that needs to come up before the plug will come out.
    - unscrew the temp display at the bottom and remove.
    - un-solder the existing bulb from the temp display unit, and solder in your replacement (12v miniature bulb from Maplin).

    Hope that helps.

There is no need to remove steering wheel, you can pull instrument cluster out with steering wheel in place.

I find it much easier to remove the steering wheel. BUT if you do, you'll need VAG-COM to clear the airbag fault code.

There's no fault code caused by removing the steering wheel airbag on my car. I've always had the battery disconnected for a few minutes before doing it, just to be safe.

Yes, every time I disconnect the airbags I get a fault code. But I never disconnect the battery first...
