Vems tuining

To get it running fully? Probably about 1 grand, as a dyno will need to be rented as well.
Honestly though, I don't want to deal with it.
I have seen plenty of cars I've mapped on standard ECU's where the owners randomly put 95 RON into them when it's mapped on 99, I dread to think what will happen on VEMS if this were to happen, and I don't want fingers pointing at me for when stuff starts to melt.
Plus the idle and all the other aspects need lots more work.
I mean, one thing is to get it running on a drag strip or race where you are at 100% pedal, the other is to get it working as an every day car so you don't have to think what ECU the car has, as everything just works including cold start and so on. And this is a huge lot of work on any standalone.
Basically most people ignore whatever you tell them. If you tell them to take it easy, or not floor it, or always use higher rated fuel, they will still put 95 RON into it and cane the crap out of it, because they think you are being "overly cautious", and I just don't want to deal with the damage.
Also, not sure which "Richard" you are referring to.Comment

You are asking the wrong question at Dmitri.
Why would you want him to tune something he is not really familiar with when he can do x10 better job tuning a motronic for the same heavily modified setup?

If you want your VEMS tuned get someone who does that every day, and he will probably do a much better job than me at getting all the nuances right than me learning on the job.
While I know what timing, fueling and so on to run on many setups, I would feel like a complete ape being totally unfamiliar with the ECU and user interface.
Not that I couldn't do it, but I have enough business coming my way tuning stock ECU's, that I don't want to do it.Comment

out of interest whats the highest hp motronic setup you've done so far?

yeah,thats important.....
all the people here we know that not all the fuel stations has the same quality fuel,,,it does not mind if all are called 98 (for example)
so what could happend with Vems or any other standalone without knock control if suddenly someone put fuel in the wrong station?
or is it not dangerous as i think? OR you cant map to the physic limits on Vems just in case? or tune it to the limits but on regular 95 fuel?

Various GT35R setups. Highest that was measured with the RS4 MAF and all my mapping setup was 580 whp on a Mustang dyno on race fuel. But the timing, fueling and MAF were dialed in by a friend of mine using my software.
Highest I have personally tuned was a GTX35R, but no idea what it made, as the dizzy gear got snapped off the camshaft and when they were fixing it back home they managed to slip something into the turbo impeller while it was spinning, so the turbo must be replaced.
This car should be dynoed in Spring once the new turbo is fitted.
I think one of the highest HP cars will be Thuppu's on here on E85 and HX40 Super...
Either way, there is not really a limit to where you can go with the stock ECU, as long as you use a MAF that can read the air. RS4 MAF on the GT35R setups does max out after about 6000 rpm, but I have a good idea what to do about this.
I also have flat shift and launch control with antilag working on the stock ECU, but really - if you are going to make really big power on these motors, it's probably not a street car anymore.
And if it's not a street car, but a specialized car, then it's much better to just use a speed density based standalone than to try to make the Motronic do something it was not designed for. There is absolutely zero advantage for the stock ECU on a competition car.Comment

When it comes to vems and poor fuel since knock control is not working at the moment, all you can do and rely on is the config. Switch were you can immediately switch to a safe tune you could use for those reasons.yeah, thats important.....

When I did a road trip in Norway I was finding a lot of fuel stations with only 95oct. Fuel. So I used my safe map for those occasions. Of course its easy for me as I have a cheap lap top when I go on long trips with me. For anyone that doesn't know what they are doing, if they are able to upload a tune (takes 10sec) from a laptop to the ecu, you can have a map for every occasion and tune.
All you have to do is realise if the fuel is bad or not early on. In Greece most of the times its obvious from the first drive away from the petrol station. Most of the times of the timing is high the engine will feel as if its tightening before pinging. A feel of loss of torque.
If the station looks dodgy, you just flick the switch anyway

Problem is, most people who's cars I map are really into all this enough to think of these things. All you have to do is realise if the fuel is bad or not early on. So for them the knock control saves the butt...
And if many times what I say has been ignored regarding "Do not put less than 98 RON into it", then what's the chances they are going to remember to switch the maps...
I say pretty much zero.Comment

The main reason for me to use stand alone ecu is to remove the maf as I didn't want to put bends ect ect off the turbo to the air filter as I want to keep it looking simple like this.

But I'm told the maf can be removed and put on the preasure side out of site .
But in doing so will the car run ok before it's mapped ?Comment

The best way is to plan ahead. If you ended up in this way and hadn't planned of the method of mapping the car, then you do have a pickle. Otherwise you would have organised the engine bay to be able to receive the maf. Maf on the pressure side is something only MRC will know how to tune. Not my cup of tea.
