This connector is generally the same on most Bosch ECU's of that era. Audi, BMW and so on.
Both diesel and petrol. It's JPT-55.

Access the back of the T55 connector and push the 19, 37 and 55 pins back towards the front of the connector.

You'll probably get away with taking the connector apart and pushing the pins back in until they click into place. If they dont want to stay in position you can remove them and bend the little tabs back and try again. Replacing the whole connector will be a horrible job!

Oh, you can buy the JPT pins from eBay I picked some up recently for pennies.

I agree 110% Steve. Andy is way better off working with the existing connector than starting over.

Please don't try to do all the pins down there, just the ones that are causing you issues. I am surprised that pushing the pins back in didn't work.

its the 3 on the end that are causing the problem, that will be the only ones i will be attempting, the problem is the brown plastic plug-it appears to be slightly split as can be seen in the picture

right starting to get a bit confused.Tonight at 9pm was the first time ive had a proper chance to get to have a look at this all week, its obviously pitch black at this point but have a torch blah blah blah...(neighbours must think im a proper geek!)
battery reading on my multimetre is 10volts so obviously a bit low after being sat all week, i managed to replace pin 55 (diagnostic obd port) after being tipped off that the brown ecu plug actually comes apart (thanks tonks) thus making pin removal a doddle! I remove pin 37 and decide its fine so refit.Go to start and it just turns over, i check again the voltages at the terminals and this is the slightly confusing bit: i have got power coming into the ecu (8 volts at this point) on pin 18 and pin 19 which is ground is reading 0 volts as it should.
Checked pin 37 again and no power at all.As far as i knew pin 37 was for switched 12v for injectors, maf etc, but then on s2-audi.co.uk pin 37 is a 12v battery feed via the fuel pump relay.....so i swapped the relay and still get the same readings.Could this be because at this point the battery was getting flat?
its still stuck in my mind how when i wiggled ever so slightly the ecu when running it then died everytime. perhaps i should ask to try someone else's ecu? my ecu has got some "spink" chips in that ran a treat and then i replaced the r201 resister, could this have failed? if it did wouldnt it still run? sorry for all the questions and if i appear to be going off track,im just trying to explore all avenues.
battery on charge for the night so i will be trying again in the morning....but quel surprise i hear its torrential rain tomorrow again.....

                            thanks as always people....

How was tonks's ECU hint different than mine? How did you get the purple pin lock to move? (I couldn't figure out how to get the purple pin lock to move).
