MaxxECU supports digital speed sensor, ie original or retrofit signals from a digital sensor such as one sitting on the cars drive
shafts and sends speed signals. In Inputs -> Digital inputs, select the input and set the input as a ”speed sensor (gearbox)”
I'd say yes you can... but check it first before making the loom permanent
"For example, some of our radios have "GALA" that automatically adjusts the volume according to road speed. For some of our radios, this Gala signal, per Steve M's (Boxflare's) radio pin-out Excel spreadsheets, goes into the radio at T8/1 which is Connector 3 for the radio. The white/blue wire source, according to Bentley, is at T6v/5, as shown above. T6v is a blue connector on Connector Stn 3. It also serves the connection of the white/blue wire to the rear diff controller. This signal comes from the G21 speedometer which in turn got its signal from the G22 Vehicle Speed Sensor.
Here is a view of Connector Stn 3 (base photo courtesy of Typ44). I still need to find out what the green connector in Position 7 is doing and what the thermal fuse on the left is for.

Audi Original "S" Cars - Specifications - Hello fellow S4 owners, I am in the process of building/programming a digital lcd boost gauge/voltmeter/trip computer/etc/etc that fits in the hole in the gauge cluster where the original '92 one was. I have found some of the specs on the sensors for the car but am missing...
Thanks for that link. I need to reference it in my G22 Info Post. (with a Note "Courtesy of Dustovich") (but I would correct the "hall sender" comment to "reed switch")

Thanks but I think I know the details of what I am using better than you Dave

I think the easiest place to take the GALA signal will be the motronic connector or close to it. Have to measure it first though...

Done. Comments and square wave "graph" added.

"FURTHER UPDATE:
This is from dustovich in Edmonton, Alberta:
"Actually, we are all wrong about the speed sensor. Every revolution it pulses to 10 volts 8 times per revolution. Or every 1/8th a turn. So the standard oe tire size of 225/50-16 has a circumference of 78.06 inches or 1982.7mm. So between cycles you will have travelled 247.8mm or 9.75".
Visualized below as a square wave:
If we divide it out there are 4035.5 pulses/km. So now we know the distance measurement, now for speed. 1 km/h would be 4035.5 / 60 / 60 = 1.120972 hz and 100 km/h would be 112.0972 hz. So you can feed this into whatever you want to measure your speed.
The easiest place to tap into the vss is the white blue wire on pin 1 of the blue plug in connector station 2 (passenger side kick panel). To see for yourself, put your meter on dc volts, put the positive lead in the connector and the other to ground/chassis and move the car slightly forward, you will see the pulses. It will even stay at 10v if you don't move the car when it is on the trigger.
The actual (EDITreed switch signal goes directly into the gauge cluster and would require amplification to get the same signal as we see from this other location (google hall sender). The gauge cluster amplifies and rectifies the signal into a square wave and sends it to the ecu and wherever else it needs to go.
Hope this information is of more use then to just me haha."

There is no amplification or rectification required to use a hall sender.
In the stock setup the reed switch simply earths a voltage generated by the speedo chip. The earlier UAF chips require the pull-up resistor Aaron posted earlier in the thread. The later Motorolla chips don't care about the polarity of the input signal - they just work.
