Fuel pump whine?

Evening all,

Playing with my newly aquired B3 coupe and the root cause of a notable whie from the bot has to be traced before it drives me mad.

Is this likely to be th fuel pump on the way out or is thre another likely culprit?

All suggestions welcomed,

Sounds very much like a fuel pump noise. If its there when the car is running but not moving it has to be the pump.

Are they easy to access / change? Just a bit concerned if its on it way out?...

You could bridge the fuel pump relay terminals to hear the pump run with everything else off, just to be sure.

I'd get it replaced if it were me.

It will eventually fail, but it could be some time....

Certainly could, mine's whined for 100,000 miles ever since I run it out of fuel.....

My pump has been noisy since 2006!

Did you mean B3 coupe or 3B coupe. If B3 then it will prime if you just turn the key. If 3B you will have to jump the relay. A lot of them while especially if u have taken seats out and now you are just noticing the sound.

Whines when priming - but could it just be most noticeable because the fuel tank is nearly empty (and that compared to the 'other cars' I have, it's at least 15 years older...?

Try replacing your fuel filter first.

Cheap and easy, quieted mine down once before on a b6a4.

Though, once the pump starts making noise it is suspect to fail without warning down the road... literally!

Is it the higher levels of ethanol in modern fuels thats taking its toll on the fuel systems of older cars, or is it that they are old and worn anyway ??

M S8 pump started wining and 30 mins later it died
I have heard of them going on for ages before they fail but in my case it just gave up..

We're all coupes EFI ? What engine type ?
If its CIS the pumps are loud
