    VAGCOM 409-1 question

    Hey,
borrowing my friends computer to try and get VagCom working. I have a copy of 409-1 and the two cables used to connect to my 3B.
When I go into the program settings to test/save the port I do not have an option for a USB connection onle COM1,2,3 and 4.

Can anyone shed some light or point me towards where I can get more information?

I have tried the VCDS download from RosTech but my cable is a cheap one and it doesnt recongnise it.

    Cheers

the cable will show as a com port in device manager, you then set vagcom to that com port number

Right. Tested and using com3. Plugged into the car and went to run engine codes and its saying that there is no response from the controller. As you may have guessed ive never used vagcom before.

is there a how to guide anywhere?

This is prolly your issue. Cheap "pirated" cables often doesn't work with the latest Ross tech software and it need a cracked version of the software to work at all. I would strongly recommend to buy a genuine cable as you are supporting further development and the development already done to this great tool. Also genuine cables comes with support and they do work a lot more reliable than those pirate cables.

I had a friend with a similar problem to what you have. After a lot of testing he got the cable working but sometimes it had struggles connecting to the modules and it could lose connection during logging and so on. We first thought it was something wrong with his car but once we tested with my genuine cable there was no problems at all.

Tried to connect to another controller with the same result. I am coming to the conclusion that its the cable. The computer I'm using is running vista will that have any effect?

Many of the cheap ebay cables don't work. I had the same issue and bought 3 different £5 ebay pieces of crap before I bought one of these and can confirm it works fine with 409 and VCDSLite.

Maybe you need to install a driver (USB to Serial)

These cables only work with the VAG lite software Mines works fine and has done for over a year. You can't log using it, as it's too slow and the VAG lite features are limited but for reading codes, it's perfect,.

I have one from ECU tools, I can do logs, live runs, clear codes and so on, I bought VCDS from the Ross Tech, installed my drivers and its fine, my latency rate isn't too bad at all

I think the software from Ross tech is "free" but you pay for a cable and the license to use the program is in the cable that you buy from Ross tech. That's why the cable are pricey, not because it cost that much more to produce than the ebay ones.

VCDS lite is available free, but you have to pay a licence for full VCDS which you then allocate to the hardware ID of the machine it is installed upon, this allows you to use third party cables and have full accessibility and minimal latency issues with the logs, I ran with a free VCDS for ages but it was limited to just scanning codes and clearing, I bought the full VCDS software and use still with my third party dongle (and third party 2x2) with no issues.

I agree with other people that cheap copy often does not work, but did you check if your fuse that feeds diagnostic ports is ok. If am remember correctly it should be last one on right when looking directly from top on fuse box. I had same issue last week that i could not communicate with any controller even though i purchased my VCDS from ross-tech. Check this fuse, cuase you may have one that works but your problem is in car.
