    After a clear photo

    Hi,
Yet another question, has anyone got a nice clear photo of the fan motor wiring? Since changing the radiator mine keeps blowing fuses so wanted to check that I have wired it correctly.

It will be different on the 3B and ABY. What do you have?

I have a 3B but it has an ABY fan so both would be handy I guess.

I assume you have the ABY wiring also?? the 3B wiring is not rated for the ABY fan, and it will keep blowing fuses! The ABY wiring has a whopping fuse in it. (I found this to my own expense and ended up going back to a 3B fan as it was easier to do that than fit all the ABY wiring and resistor pack etc)

My friend fitted it at his garage along with a 60a and 40a fuse that replaced the standard ones. Not sure if he put a resistor pack in but I have just asked him. Think he must have as it was working fine until I changed the rad.

That's why I was asking for photos as I think I may have just wired it in wrong.

                Thanks Eric,
I'll check it against mine this week and check I've wired it I the same, I'm not great with wiring so thanks for the help.
There are wires connected to the cowl at the top of the rad, are these some king of sensor?

Might need a pic of yours to see how its wired up.
When the ABY went to the 500W fan, Audi copied the Type 44 set up where the various stages are fed through a resistor pack and then one to the fan to give what in effect are the three speeds:
                  1st Stage A/C
                  2nd Stage usual fan
                  3rd Stage full blast!

The 3b has a resistor mounted on the back of the cowl where the fan motor attaches. Could do with looking at a pic myself as I'll have to do this shortly!

Some more info perhaps, with fuse blowing experiments:

Well I'm planning to go home tomorrow night if the new fuses arrive so ill try get some pictures of mine to show you. Just hoping I can sort this out without having to drain the system and disconnect any hoses. We shall see.

Here is a picture of how I have just re wired the fan motor.

Can anyone tell me which of the two fuses should be the larger one? I have removed both and now forgotten which should be rated higher.
                        Cheers

It will be the thicker one which loks like its not the red/blue one!
However as this fan is a single speed effectively having both connected is pointless as the 3rd stage cannot increase the fans speed as its already being powered at the stage two speed voltage.
I am not sure what the solution is really. It would be better to use the third stage wiring to run the fan at at the 2nd stage temperature. The 3rd stage wiring was for the stock 3b 300W fan stage whereas the ABY fan is 500W! However you would lose the 1st (a/c and after run) as well as the 2nd stage. There would be one speed!
As it is when the 3rd stage is tripped all that is happening is the fan can draw on another source of 12V. Whether this increases the fan speed or not is unclear. You said it run ok before so what fuse is blowing? According to the wiring diagram it looks likes its only the third stage is fused.
Apart from the wiring you may need to examine how to drop one stage at the beginning of the next to drop the load which could mean some wiring adaptions/relay changes.
There must be a lot of in rush current wired like that which is why the resistor pack was used. Doesen't explain how you have managed to get away with it so far unless the fan has started to give problems due to being run flat out constantly!

This is how the fan was wired in before I changed the radiator. There was a 40A and a 60A fuse which replaced the standard 3b fuses located in the fuse box. Which fuse went where is what I cannot remember.

Well if you have a multimeter check the continuity back to the fuses. You may have to remove the wire from the fan terminal and test them individually. The thicker one would have the biggest fuse.
