    Cat 1 alarm/immobiliser install

OK so the insurance have told me I need to fit a Cat1 alarm due to the engine swap on the coupe. Makes sense I guess, its about time I got one.

I think I'm going to go for a Toad Ai606 - seems like a good quality reliable unit and has all the basic features I'd ever need, plus its reasonably priced & UK made.

What is the deal with fitting & insurance approval? I'd really want to fit it myself as I've never seen a tidy "professional" install, every single one has been a complete pig's ear, so I'm loathed to pay a so-called "professional' to **** it up for me.
I guess they have this stitched up with the approval certificate?
I've never allowed anyone to do anything on my car and I really don't fancy starting now!

Has any DIY'd an install and whats the best bet of getting the certificate validated? I guess I need to find someone who will test & stamp it for a fee?

Anyone got any experience of this?

    Cheers

Depending on your insurers; on my coupe when I had the v8 swap they were happy with a letter from a local garage saying that they had tested the alarm and immobiliser and that it was all working correctly. Give them another call see if that will suffice.

Edit, difference here is that I already had the alarm fitted previously by an "approved" installer, and I just adapted the power feeds to my nee loom.

I spoke to a few local car security firms today; played dumb & said I'd bought a car with a system fitted and no certificate. Most were willing to test the install & issue a certificate for anywhere between £25 and £47. Result

So I can buy a unit online for £100, fit it properly myself and get it certificated for way less than a "professional" install, and have it done the right way - my way

Nothing surprises me when it comes to alarm 'fitters', that's quite a good one though

I'm inclined to fit one to mine if it can be certified for less than 50 quid, I'll be interested to see how you get on Alex. I'm very fortunate to live in low crime area and have a secure garage but it would be good for piece of mind when the cars parked up in town or at shows etc.

Likewise mate, however someone on my estate did steal a wheelie bin a while back

I need one for insurance, to be honest I don't think they are worth bothering with - a brazen, determined and skilled thief can easily do away with one in minutes.
Hell, a few years ago me and a mate ripped a Cat1 system out of his MK2 golf after it packed up - in a disabled space literally right outside Tesco on a Saturday afternoon. With the alarm blaring, after about 10 minutes we got it started - the control unit and a bag of wires went in the bin and we drove off in it. No-one batted an eyelid.

LOL, yeah it's amazing what people will walk/drive straight by, years ago I broke into a mates Fiesta with a coat hanger in Bristol city centre on a busy weekday afternoon, he'd locked his keys in. Took me the best part of an hour and no one said a thing, the rozzers even drove by and I gave them a wave, guess they could see I wasn't a pro

So yeah, I see your point, guess it's not really worth the hassle unless I can get my hands on a good system for free or close too.

I've got mine on a classic policy as at the moment the car isn't all that far from stock, well at least it isn't to the naked eye, but once I get it mapped and the brakes/17" wheels on I'm going to have too get some better cover so I may have to get one as well. Pity as my current policy is 170 quid a year fully comp, no agreed value or any other trimmings though.

A few well placed switches on the ignition and fuel circuits is all you need
I've done a few on old gts, then forgotten about them and wondered why the car won't start!
Best one I've seen was on a transit- you had to touch the metal barrel surround and a random dash screw before it would start!
If fitting your own why not have a mobile connected and do remote engine cut off/ tracking?

Yup this would be the best bet but I need to get a Thatcham approved system for insurance.

The question now, is what cool stuff can I do with the additional control outputs & remote buttons? Was thinking controlling the headlights from the fob would be useful.

Might that be a new level of OCD?

A wheelie bin. Good god that would annoy me.

Alarms are pointless. Mine has one along with that batty immob fob thing on the dashboard. Pretty sure its only purpose is to satisfy the insurers as I never set the damned thing. No point. As previously stated, people just ignore car alarms and treat them as a nuisance rather than a signal that something untowards is happening.

Buy the alarm, don't fit it and send them a garage certificate, should be someone on here that would do one

My passenger door and boot and fuel cap no longer open when using the key in the drivers door lock. The central locking from the fob also doesnt work (it used to until a few months ago) yet the central locking system all works fine when the key is used in the passenger door lock. This is the only thing on my car that annoys me. I assume the alarm/central locking fob is linked to the drivers door lock and something either mechanical or electrical has broken somewhere on this side of the car. Any idea what might need fixing or replacing
