This may seem like a daft question but where would I find the fuse for the head unit on an S6? No power to the head unit, checked the fuses at the side of the dash but none list radio and they are all OK anyway.

Glad you found it. It is in position A4 in the underhood relay and fuse "lunch box", Auxiliary Relay Panel 1:
