I'm aiming to try my best this weekend, as the weather has picked up, to clean up all that I can get my fingers to. Assuming that's a rousing (un)success I've also bought a code reader which should arrive in a few days to help me narrow down the problem

The code reader isn't going to help with this issue I'm sorry to say, though it's an essential bit of kit to have. I had this problem when I first put mine back on the road, I had a couple of faults setting it off. Two of them were simple enough but the main problem required the bomb to changed. I found it was setting the alarm off if the brake fluid level is under max, also the hydraulic fluid res cap sender was playing up due to dodgy contacts. Once I'd fixed those two it would only go of occasionally, that still irritated the ***** out of me so I changed the bomb and it's been fine since.

If you end up having to change the bomb then it's well worth flushing the system and renewing the fluid whist your at it.

Impossible - they were changed but a couple of months ago and I am very light on brake usage It could be one of about a billion different things, I'm not too concerned about it at the moment as I've done a few hundred miles like this with no issue so far

So on Saturday I had a fiddle under the bonnet - mostly unplugging anything I could reach to check for corrosion or whatever - and since then the 'warning' hasn't been off. Well other than the first start up on Saturday afternoon where it must have just been remembering from the last it time it was running it thought there was a fault to warn me about. Since Sunday was a nice day I had the windows open and the radio off to hear the engine and haven't had the stereo on since.

So either mindless fiddling with plugs has sorted it or not running the stereo has sorted it

Really easy to diagnose this. Its either the PAS fluid level sensor, the brake fluid level sensor or the servo pressure sensor. Unplug them one at a time until the warning goes away. Then you have located the source. If it's the servo pressure sensor then the sensor is could be bad or more likely the bomb is taking a long time to pressurise in which case you can replace it (if you can still get hold of one, at great expense) or if the bomb still tests OK and the brakes work find, leave the sensor unplugged

or if none of them, it will be a leaking servo which is also easy to test.
