    Wiring Help Required

    Hi Chaps,
    This one has me beat!!!
I have just re shelled a 1996 S2 Coupe, everything is working as it should however.

If I switch the side lights on and then the ignition the following happens.

The headlamp washer pump runs, the front wipers switch on and then after a while it flashes the red oil symbol on the autocheck.

    So far I have

    Cleaned all the earths,
Replaced both the wiper relay and the headlamp wash relay.
    Replaced the fusebox
tried a different set of stalks

I have tried it without the rear lighting loom plugged in, tried it without the wiper loom plugged in, tried it without the headlamps plugged in, tried it without the horn and washer pumps plugged in, the headlamp wash relay continues to click in and out very fast.

I am at a loss now what to try

sounds like you've got something earthed permanently that should be switched, if you catch my drift. maybe something amiss on the wiper stalk, perhaps a nipped wire?

Think all of those things that run, run through the round brown 3pin connector in the footwell. I've come across some wierd things with that connector on different cars.

My 3b wiring didn't have the connector in it at all, just a 6 pin with round connectors.
If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.

do those accessories work independently of the side light fault Brian, i.e. with ignition and no sidelights?
Sounds like the sidelight harness is pulling something to earth that it shouldn't?
Be careful as from memory the headlight washer circuit isn't fused

It should only work when the lights are on ? is there a problem with the wiring from the stalk to the washer relay is there a short on the feed to the light switch which then puts power to the washer relay is all the wiring the same on both cars ? ( as with wing mirror motors ) is there any wiring that is burnt ? which in turn has shorted it out .

Checked through the wiring again, can't see anything bare or anything trapped

Not sure which wire plug you are referring to, this is a 1996 ABY so does not have any round plugs that I can think of other than the 2 10pin plugs on the engine bay side of the bulkhead

Yes all works as it should do and nothing dim either???

I have separated the wire to the headlamp washer so the pump is not running but the relay is still going nuts

I moved the entire loom over in one hit, there is no bare wires, nothing burnt out. There was no wires in the bare shell, so have not mixed any looms etc...

On my rs2 the red oil warning light also goes on when only ignition on. I am pretty sure the fault is in one of the big round 10-pin connectors.

Ok I'll take another look... I am up for checking anything at this point.... This is the first time I have been truly stumped with Audi wiring!

Mine did that too, caused by dodgy oil pressure sender/switch (cotton reel sender on the block)

Stupid question, but you didn't plug the stalks in the wrong side by accident? I.e. lighting connector to wiper stalk & vice versa?

i think the problem is the headlamp washer pump relay.maybe this is broke and when you put the headlights on the relay j39 is shortcut and give a washer signal to j31 relais so your front wipers are to activated.
i woud say, change the headlamp washer relay are remove it

try unplugging the wiper stalk and see if it does anything different. maybe then try the indicators then the lights...might help narrow what circuit the problem is on?

A thought I've just had, the two stalk housings are connected with pins when they assemble around the steering column, seems a logical place where the problems could stem from.
