Go easy on me as I am new to Audi's and I have always been told the only stupid question is the one you don't ask!!!
I keep seeing pictures of reasonably modern and even Group B rally Audi's having relays with 214 printed on them. Is this just an Audi part number??????
No its just some kind of short code or type number - normal Audi part numbers are a nine digit system, sometimes with one or more suffix codes to denote a colour or variant.
The first two digits refer to the Audi platform that FIRST used the part e.g. 8A, 8B, 8C or whatever - the next digits can refer to what type of part its - i.e brakes or whatever but its not a cast iron scheme so don't dwell on it much - a typical number would be 8E0 137 654 A. A part that is superseded in life might get an entirely new number or the same number with a "B" suffix.
A trick when searching for parts on the internet is to always remember the spaces, ignore the spaces or replace them (with dashes) as different folk list the parts different ways.
I must have seen this picture with Stig Blomquist and a dash full of grey relays.
Partnumber is helpful for orderning parts from the supplier. 214 is VAG relay code. It defines the relay type in wire diagrams and workshop manuals. For instance, there is 214 relay in audi 80/Coupe main radiator electric fan circuit.
Factory schematics do NOT reference those relay short codes at all. I can't remember if they get referenced by the parts system though. I can have a look later.
Don't overthink it. Many have a short code stamped on there - some don't. Many are ordinary SPST or SPDT patterns with a variety of current ratings. If in doubt - check here !
