    factory battery gave up

Its cold here, sometimes minus 12 in the mornings. Today at 11 in the morning I tried to start the engine and I felt the obvious signs of a dying battery. It was not nine years old yet. I wonder if the new one would last this long.

Cool battery you had. I bought a now battery a month ago. It is a Vesna (slovenian manufacturer) extreme, 65 ah and 2350 of starting power. (or however it is called )

I was skiing this weekend, started the car in the morning at something like -20. The engine started in a sec.

      Buy a GEL battery!

The Volvo branded one in my dads old car lasted over 10 years..suspect it was a rebadged Bosch one. Great battery and the car wasn't garaged, although not as harsh here as on the continent. That car never made a single journey less than 15 miles and covered about 25k miles a year. This all helps it last a long time.

New batteries seem to use poor materials...I mean how the hell can you screw up the design of a lead acid battery??? Many manufacturers seem to by cutting massive corners. Modern ones, even from reputable brands, do not seem to last as well as they did years ago. They don't make em like they used to!

OE batteries are built to a spec, well used to be. The original battery in a car lasts far longer than ANY aftermarket one.
This has now changed and we are finding that modern batteries last a max of about 4 years.

On the subject of batteries. I bought a E58 Endurance battery, Its a four year guarantee. When I bought it he told me these were the ones they deal with now ,they come from south Africa and are calcium, never need topping up ...blah

I have been working away for a couple of weeks, the car has not been started for 12 days. I went to it today. Completely flat, wouldn't even open on alarm fob. Is this right ? or have I been duped? or maybe a dud battery? any advice welcome . Cheers.

P.S put jump leads on and it kicked up straight away.

Must be the time of year, mine has just died too. For some reason my cars kills them every two years, this is the 3rd one i've had to buy Car originally had a 63ah so i always replaced with the same rating.

Can anybody recommend a good brand to go for? Only ever bought random cheap brands before.

                Cheers,

That does not surprise me to be honest. I don't think many batteries will keep a car alarm going for more than a couple of weeks.

My S2 Battery which is only 2 years old will last for 2 weeks at a maximum while the alarm is activated etc.

You should be fine once it has been jump started again though.

(Do you have a garage and not regularly use your S2? If so I have an excellent product you may be interested in...)

                  Cheers,

                  Steve.

Go for a Bosch Silver Mark. Not too expensive either if you have a Bosch outlet/dealer or a EuroCarParts locally.

I replaced the battery recently in my Mum's Renault. It was just starting to show signs of weakening in the cold weather we've been having of late. It would seem that it was also the original from 1989!!!.
Well, it can't have been less than 10 years old as it had the sticker still on it from the Channel Isles from whence the car originally came......And it was a Lucas!

At present no I dont. anything I need to do I nip up to my bro's house he has an empty garage. I am on the lookout now for a house with garage, Its a pain reading something on here and not being able to nip out to try out suggestions. Well its a pain not having a garage full stop.
