Trip Computer Stalk Service and Repair?

I found Error404's general stalk service and repair thread:

and this pdf that I created of that "for" Error404:

    http://12v.org/urs/Error404sHowToSer...witchesDIY.pdf

HOWEVER, unless I am missing something, I don't see anything about opening and repairing the trip computer stalk with it's end switch and reset button.

I am looking for DIY hints and gotcha prevention.

      Some hopefully useful information incoming

To disassemble computer stalk end you will need a flathead screwdriver as small as possible. Preferably two of them.

Use a screwdriver to pry out "Reset" button. Be careful, there's spring under it that can skyrocket button to other dimension.

Carefully pry up and push the U shaped part towards the end of stalk

      Same on the other side

      Take it off

Note the tabs. One on each side. They hold inner part in place

Use your tools to pry it out.

      And that's it.

If you want to remove it completely, you need to unsolder wires.

      1. - Black
      2. - Yellow
      3. - Gray
      4. - Blue
      5. & 6. are for intensive wash button that's not there but can be fitted.

If any more information needed, I'm here.

Impressive mdz, as usual. Dave will have to recruit you to augment his work.

Very nice. Thanks very much. In the interim, I got a very similar answer on my home forum (I asked there as well as here):

            The Audi Enthusiast website. Forums for all Audis including A4, S4, A5, S5, A6, S6, allroad, A8, S8, TT, R8, Q5, Q7, 4000, 100, 200, v6, v8, vintage, local forums

And then some wise ace comes up with:

"Nice writeup but there's a waaay easier way to do it. Simply go to the base of the stalk and drive out the pin holding the stalk to the base part (the one with the contacts on it). You can see the pin in pic 1 you posted. No soldering or prying. Just swap stalk to the other base. Did this on my car with a v8 stalk swapped on the newer A6/S6 stalk for the sport steering wheel swap. Intensive washer stalk runs the trip comp AND TDS-1".

TO which the orignal poster, grillage replied,:

            Okay, here's the easy way..........

At least I (we all) have different options now. Thanks again.

              Thanks!
Stalks themselves are identical on D11/C3/C4/B3/B4/B5 pre-facelift, it's the base that differs. You can combine them to whatever you want. For example stalks on my car are combined from B4, B5 and C4.
I can to a bit more detailed writeup about stalk swapping (as it's a part of ongoing Cabrio project) and cruise stalk anatomy if you want.
