    override a stuck window?

my audi A6 c4 has a stuck window. Its an electrical problem. The window operation has been iffy for a while with it sometimes refusing to go up or down. But usually i've been able to close it by holding the key in the lock position.

but today i was unable to close it at all! :-( and had to leave it open while at work.

I can hear it 'clicking' when i press the button but its not shifting.

is this a problem with the 'thermal' switch? And is there a way to override it to get it shut? by maybe crossing the appropriate wires together?

    thanks in advance.

Well, it could be the ignition switch (not providing power to the windows, etc, in the RUN position) OR the window motor is FUBAR'd OR the cable lift system has split its wires and things are jammed up. I think you are going to have to at least remove the inner door panel and probably the window cassette to check things out The link to a DIY I wrote is below.

    NOTE:

    1. The window motors are the same as the C4 100/UrS4 up to 1995 A6/UrS6. After that, the motor is different (smarter - distributed control, not central control).

    2. The mechanical portion of the window regulator is different between the C4 100/UrS4/1995 A6/UrS6 and the later C4 A6/UrS6s. The UrS4/early UrS6) regulators (the cable lift system) are bolted to the window cassette frame. The later C4 A6/UrS6 regulators are riveted to the window cassette frame, as discussed on pgs. 8/17 and 9/17 of this:

thanks for replying. its not mechanical stuck. When it actually works it goes up and down without any struggle at all.

Its just that the switch wouldn't work sometimes. but usually it would still work with the key in the door trick. But today i have been unable to get the switch to work at all. but i can hear in the door a single click noise like a relay or something?

This is true of C4s. Something like these:

Here is a diagram with some wire colours that could help you look for broken wires in the front door wiring gater. I think this is the "driver's side" wiring (Left side for LHD cars and right side for RHD cars).
