    coupe rear wiper fault FIXED

    hello all.

I seem to be having a good run of success with sorting electrical problems on my coupe at the moment, last week it was electric windows that only went down and then not up and this week I have fixed the rear wiper which hasn't wiped for years!

For a change, this turned out to be quite simple job - fault finding involved removing all the trim in the hatch and boot carpet from behind the spare wheel. Checking for voltage at the motor and I got none, boot light and heated rear screen also not working. Earth also not good... work back and find the plugs behind the spare wheel and test voltage there - all good. Beware one thing though which nearly caught me out; the motor earths through its casing and if applying 12v direct to check your motor is not dead, -V on the body and +v on the wire that goes directly into the motor body. I don't know what all the gubbins are for on the side of the gearbox but put your power supply into the 2 wires in the 2 pin connector and it won't work.

Prime suspect was a break in loom where it comes out of the C pillar and into the tailgate.

wiggle wiggle...voltmeter flickers 0-12v on and off confirming things.

I couldn't believe what I found when I extracted the rubber boot covering the suspect area of loom. 4 of the 5 wires had broken completely!

Straight forward job from there on in - new lengths of wire spliced in using solder and heat shrink, re wrap with loom tape put it all back together and hey presto I can now wipe the autumnal dew from my rear screen

Top tip for getting the wires run through the spaces and around corners through holes etc - don't even try and do it by pot luck as it won't work. Get a reasonably stiff gauge cable and send that through, (don't forget to pull out the big block of foam that should be stuffed up inside the bottom of the C pillar and out of sight) tape your new wires to that cable and then pull them through. When it comes to feeding them all through the rubber boot - a splash of silicone rubber lube will help no end.

I can't believe that after over 13 years of ownership, I'm running out of things to fix!

Also this afternoon I've been through all the dashboard illumination snags and fixed them - is it embarrassing that I really like having switches lit up in all the right places?

Paintwork is one the cards next year but that's not for the driveway...
