    Central locking 80 B4

    Hey,

I have an issue with my central locking system, on an Audi 80 B4 sedan. I locked my car and then when I was about to open it again the central locking pump wouldnt work. (Usually I can hear the pump working, but now its dead silent). The fuse is fine.

Where should I start troubleshooting? Is the pump dead? Where is the pump located?

Just to be more precise, what year B4? Quattro or FWD? Infrared remote or just a key in the door central locking? Immobilizer or not?

The central locking pump is inside a foam box. Looks like it should be in the right side of the boot, perhaps behind the boot trim. Item 18 in the diagram and this link. You will need to find the locking pump and get the Part Number off it (there are about 5 different ones) so we can help you further:

Hey, its an '92 quattro. The bootlid is closed and locked (previous owner changed it out without swapping the locking cylinder) but i will try and reach it from the back seats. Its operated with a key in the door only. I havent noticed any immobilizer, but i dont think i have it because the car is as basic as possible, no extra equipment.

Will try and get a partnumber for you tomorrow. Thanks for the help so far.

        "92" in Swedish registration-talk. If it is a B4 then it will be a Aug-Dec 1992 built 1993 Audi 80q.

I think you are potentially in for a world of hurt here and will be cursing the previous owner. See if you can find one of those rubber "tees" that connect the vacuum lines, i.e. remove the back seat. On the right side of the car (passenger side for LHD), there should be a "T" with hard green plastic hoses in it. One branch will come from the pump, one will go to the rear and front doors on the right side and the final one of the three will cross over to the left side of the car and the left rear and front doors. Disconnect that line from the T and apply a vacuum to the open end of the T. Listen for the door locks (and trunk/boot lock) opening. With the boot open, find the pump and its PN.

Probably going to be a two connector 4A0862257H, like this one:

When you get the pump out, open it up and check the PCB. Often these pumps suffer from broken solder joints witch is less than 1$ fix, if you have soldering iron and some solder laying around. Often repairable pumps are just thrown out because owner is afraid from soldering.

Great news (that it is out). How exactly did you get it out and did you find it in the boot behind a panel?

4A0862257A is obviously a very low tech two connector central locking pump. It has come up before in the context of could a 257C be used in place of a 257A, to which my answer at the time was:

Searching on 4A0862257C "pump with control unit" results in "Dropped, please use as replacement 4A0862257A". LOL. Full circle. At least they should be compatible.

For giggles, I decided to check 4A0862257E, it says, "Dropped on 31/05/1995, please use as replacement 4A0862257H".
Which today (August 15, 2016), I see says 257H was dropped on 01/04/2005 and replaced with a 4A0862257P "pump with control module" and an additional 4A0971014 adapter wiring harness.

Anyone of the PN other than the 257P will work. A quick check on eBay shows up lots of available used pumps.

                    Hey,
Yes the pump was inside som foam on the right side of the boot, behind the panel thingy that covers the whole side. At the rear end, right behind the wheelwell.

Will try and troubleshoot a littlebit, if I can't find something I will just get a new one. Many thanks for your help!

Thanks just wanted to confirm that.

How did you get the boot open?

Oh the old "trunk monkey" trick. Luckily your 80 obviously didn't have the boot liner installed.

Good work. Hope you can find a solution soon. Good luck.

Resoldered the solder points that looked bad, now it works!

Yeah, have been looking for the boot liner, but luckily I havent found one yet!

                              Fantastic. Good job.

As for the trunk liner, I say don't worry about it until you get that trunk lock re-keyed.

This posts might help you with rekeying:
