    VSS signal in an urq.

Ok, so with my engine jury rigged and running nicely, with a functioning MIL light installed and the blink code method now down pat, i need to turn my attention to the Vehicle speed signal that apparently the motronic ecu requires to keep the light from coming on.

Ive done a search of the forum and found one or two items of info that are useful, but the main issue i need to overcome is the fact i have a cable driven speedo.

Is there a simple solution to providing the vss signal that anyones found?
As far as ai can see, the urs4/s6 had a ring attached inside the diff casing and a sensor in place of the usual gear drive for the cable, so im wondering if its possible to swap out the old speedo drive gear, atfach the new urs4 item and sender (plug and play maybe?) and run an electronic speedo?

Ideally id like to keep things simple ( they need to be for me) im just having difficulty finding any hard solutions for this issue.

    Any help gretefully appreciated.

Shooting from memory here, but the Cruise control should be able to provide VSS signal. It attaches behind the cluster on speedo drive cable. Its been a while, but i remember that the cruise control system was basically the same as used in the later B3/C3 and several newer cars using VSS signal to modulate vaccum.

Here comes the common sense to help. The cruise control module was the same as used on later B3/C3 cars, I have successfully used C3 cruise control module on my UrS6 the VSS signal must be the same or close enough to work.

So i would guess the simplest way would be to install cruise control or atleast the VSS module and use the signal from there, only problem would be to find the B2 cruise control kit...

On C3 the cluster generates electric speed signal from cable drive for cruise. Same on B3, 12V signal from speed sensor goes to cluster, and the cluster converts the signal for other equipment, aux temp lcd, climate, diff lock, cruise, ecu and so on.

Car never had cruise fitted and has a cable drive to the speedo.
Unless theres some way of modifying the speedo to generate the required signal i think i can feel something painful coming on.

        Thanks for the replies.

you should take a look how the urq/cgt converts the signal for the digidash

why not use a speedsensor from a gearbox from a b3 car? i'm pretty sure it wil fit a 5 speed gearbox from an ur,but like varia says, the best option is a speedsensor from a digidash from a ur.......

Actually what i would do is to get a UrS speedo sender. Mount a magnet onto the inner cv joint (small bracket from the bolt perhaps). Then create a bigger bracket that would fit the sender in correct location over the magnet. On the sender pin3/31 goes to the common ground, pin2/G is the VSS signal that can be fed to the ECU.

                    Here is what I did.

Scroll down the page. Only thing is the Cruise control switch has to be on all the time

Okay guys, it's time I started my own project page for my urq. Basically I bought a 84 Tornado urq several years ago with the intention to do a MC engine swap and freshen the car up a bit. Having lived in Scotland for the first 22 years of my life I'm no stranger to the Audi marque. Then...
