  • Lots of car diy

Ive set aside this saturday to get a load of niggling jobs done. Being a car diy virgin, Id be glad of any handy tips from anyone who has done these jobs themselves.

-Replacing bulbs in auxillary guages - I know what Im doing here, got the guide from S2 Central.
-Replacing the Oil Temp guage - seems straight forward.
-Replacing ac pipe - the section which wraps around the front drivers side wheel arch. The gas has escaped, so assume there are no more cfc's in the system. Hoping it will be a relatively simple job once the inner wheel arch mud guards are off.

Also, front drivers side window suddently not working. I dont think its a fuse - I can here it clicking when I press the button. Think maybe the motor has gone. How do I test this? Is this a simple job?

    Cheers

Start with the window. The door card is a pain to get on and off, so it'll probably take the longest of all the jobs.

I'd remove the door handle to get to the switches, then swap wiring to on the switches to see if the behaviour is linked to the window/motor or switch.

As for the A/C you should really fit a new filter/drier before the system is recharged... and it wouldn't be a bad idea to renew the orifice tube - all good practise.

            Thanks Paul.

Where do I find the filter/drier?
Where is the orifice tube (sounds ominous)?

Presumably, I can get these from VAG parts.

Filter / drier hides behind front right inner wing panel. Orifice tube resides in one of the pipes that enters the cabin where it connects to the evaporator. Really best to get an A/C specialist with experience of the Audi 80 system. I do have the data on A/C regards the right type of orifice tube and amopunts of oil/gas to use - it will be added to S2 Central someday.

I'd also check the fuse for the window as they have metal ones under the dash that are prone to sticking and getting very hot......

                      Wiring diagram

Anyone got a wiring diagram for the s2 coupe? I want to locate the fuses for the electric windows - hopefully not a motor that is needed.

Look on S2 central - there should be schematics for windows on there...

Fuses for windows are thermal/resettable jobbies in the front auxiliary relay panel.

                            Elec windows solution?

Yep, your right - I found the relays/fuses under the drivers side dash. Now, the facts:-

-All windows and sunroof function except the front drivers side.
-When using the front drivers side window switch I can hear the relay click. It does not click when using any of the other window switches or sunroof.
-The s2-audi.co.uk website under technical shows that the electric windows relay is numbers 5 and 6. I only have 1 relay which seems to be for all windows and sunroof.
-The s2-audi.co.uk website also shows the relay to be the following part no. 441 959 257 C (D), Siemans 79FA402. My part no. is 4A0 959 257, Siemans 79FA404.

                            Q. Does the clicking noise indicate that I only need to replace the relay?
                            Q. Am I correct in assuming that relay 5 and 6 are in one unit, hence the relay being double the length of the others?
                            Q. Given the different part no.s, what should I be buying - the one I have already?

                            Ta.

The electric window wiring changed thru the years. There are different variants of relay modules depending on whether your car has 1TWU (one touch window up) or not. This was deleted circa 1992-3 due to kids/idiots/murricans harming themselves when closing windows. Think the module is different again if you have rear electric pop-out windees.

                              To answer your direct q'S

1 - Sounds like a duff relay. Try swapping one with someone else local on the forum. These relays are MIGHTY expensive new, but can be had 2nd hand quite cheap.

2 - Relay 5/6 is the right one.

3 - Best go for the module with numbers matching yours, but others may be suitable. You could also fit an older module, add a wiring mod and restore 1TWU to your car. Zup to you...
